"Mesmerizing temple architecture" new review

Khajuraho Experience: The place is famous for its temples - which consists of collection of temples divided into eastern and western group of temples. out of these eastern is a bigger collection but both are equally important. you need adequate time to see these temples and idols in details. Each and every temple architecture is different in its own way and night time light and sound show is also good (though the sound is not very impressive, but its good to watch)
Food, sight-seeing and shopping: there are many places around city center of eastern group of temples, but dont expect a very good quality food and service. We landed at Raja's cafe and service was pathetic and poor and food was ok. Depending on what you want to eat south indian, north indian food, continental - you have limited options and nothing very great, but ok kind of stuff.
Activities & things to do: visit temples and keep clicking as much photographs as you can.
Travel tips, How to reach, travel warnings etc: we travelled on march 2013 from gwalior to khajura via Datia, jhansi...and the road near to Datia and datia to jhansi is NO ROAD at all. it was all under construction and i heard it has been like this for 1 year almost. So in case you are travelling from Gwalior to khajurao - kindly check condition of road near Datia and jhansi and in case it is bad, you can take the route from Gwalior to Shivpuri to khajurao - this road is lengthy by around 100km but shivpuri to jhansi is excellent toll road with 4 lane highway (2 lane each side) and you will finally endup in saving time as compared to travelling at around 10km/hr average over that bad stretch of road and if you do not have a SUV kind of vehicle you always have a risk of car breakdown on that extremely bad road stretch.

"Awesome Temples in Khajuraho"

Khajuraho Experience: It's one of the must see places in India. We were spell bound after seeing the works on the temples in east and western side temples. The compound of the temples are very well maintained - this is very rare in India. But because of poor sound system the light and sound program in the premises of western side temple is not at all good.
Food, sight-seeing and shopping: Sight Seeing - Temples and temples only. Stone items (replica of some of the works in temple) are available. But rates are very high and bargain has to be done.
Activities & things to do: To enjoy the calm and quiet surrounding of the temples in western side.
Travel tips, How to reach, travel warnings etc: Reachable by road, train etc.

"Khajuraho Temples!"

Khajuraho Experience: We went to see the famous Khajuraho temples which are about 1000 years old. The temples are in two major groups, the Western group consists of mainly several Shiva temples built by several rulers of Chandela dynasty and were built between 10th and 12th centuries, the Eastern groups are Jain temples, which were built by Chandelas but were given to Jains later and have murties of Mahavir and other Jain Thirthankars. The temples have exquisitely carved. Sculptors parallel to non in this world. Words cannot do justice to the beauty of these sculptors, one has to go and see these for themselves to enjoy and appreciate these sculptors!!!
Food, sight-seeing and shopping: There is not much besides the activities connected to the temples. In the evening these is light and sound show at the temples that gives the history of these temples, Chandelas and the mythology associated withthe temples. Also one can see folk dance shows at the MP State Govt. tourist center which was quite good and was performed by non-professional village folks. One can go to see nearby waterfalls, Raneh and Pandav falls. Kanha National Park is not too far away and also the Bandhavgarh National Park Tiger Preserve is about 4 to 5 hours away by car. A few reasonably good restaurants in town besides in the big hotels can round out the evening after the dance shows.
Activities & things to do: Already described above in food, sight seeing.
Travel tips, How to reach, travel warnings etc: One can go to Khajuraho from Delhi or Mumbai by morning flights which are very convenient. An evening overnight train from Nijamuddin arrives Khajuraho in the morning and is quite convenient.

"Khajuraho - Poetry sculpted on stone - bold and beautiful"

Khajuraho Experience: The first thing that is quite noticeable about the flight to Khajuraho is the ratio of foreign nationals to Indian nationals is quite high. It seems that the Indian tourists are not much interested about this place. This is a bit sad, as the temples here showcase the zenith of the stone curving in Indian architecture. Khajuraho is well known for its ornate temples, which are one of the most beautiful temples in medieval India. The temples are famous for its erotic sculptures. However, the erotic sculptures are less than 10 percent of the curving and the number of curving and sculptures are so high that it gets quite difficult to locate one. The sculptures are quite bold and beautiful. From a distance, you can see the wavy nature of the sculptures.
Food, sight-seeing and shopping: The overall trip can be combined in one extended weekend. We reached in Jet Airways flight and reached at 2 PM. We started the trip with the Southern and Eastern group of temples. It is possible to complete the sightseeing of those temples within a span of 2 hours, which include the remains of the latest discovery, incomplete Bijamandala mound. We had sufficient time to have a cup of coffee, before we went inside the Western group of temples to see the Light and Sound show. The Bamboo restaurant was a convenient location to have the coffee, as it is just opposite to the entrance. It was a great experience to see the show. The lighting with Amitabh Bacchan’s narration makes it an unforgettable experience. Unfortunately there were some interference from the local Bhagabati Jagaran Manch – but those the minor irritants. It was quite useful to see the Light and sound show, before seeing the temple complex. The first half of the second day was spent in seeing the Western Group of temples – which is the ultimate experience. After the light and sound show, one can spend about 1 hour of shopping in the nearby market, fondly known as Connaught Place. It was mainly the sculptures. Raja Cafe is popular eating point, but it may also be worth to try the food in Siddharth International, which is just behind Raja Café. Avoid taking food in Jhankar hotel (MPTDC). The quality and quantity is inferior to Siddharth International or Raja Cafe.
Activities & things to do: It was our driver who suggested to go for further sight-seeing – off-the-beaten-track. We first went to Raneh Falls. It was a great falls, with is situated 25 kms from Khajuraho. This is mini Grand-Canyon and the land-formation at that place is just awesome. The combination of red sandstone and granite and the dark green basalt stone, which formed from magma is great. It was a great experience to see such unique land formation. After that we went to see Pandava Falls. In between we had our lunch in tree-top restaurant, an unique restaurant which is at tree-top, beside river Ken (Karnavati). Pandava falls is another unique experience. The only negative point is the number of stairs. However, avoid the place during evening – as the place gets quite lonely. We had the company of 5 more tourists only.
Travel tips, How to reach, travel warnings etc: Avoid the place during extended summer season. Otherwise, the weather is quite pleasant. Avoid the local touts and some of the guides. They seem to over-emphasize the erotic sculptures with added spices. That gets a bit irritating and one actually misses the beauty of the scenes, which can be enjoyed with minimum words. The poetry is already written in the stone and you do not need any interpreter to understand the same. It is best to buy the World Heritage Series book on Khajuraho. The book is by Archaeological Survey of India. That is the best available book for the general tourist. Also, it is worth taking a local taxi-driver, as they know the places well. Without their help, one cannot see the Southern and Eastern group of temples. Remember to see the location of old Khajuraho village and the Ghantai temple. An extended weekend worth spending.

"Sculptings that seem better than the DaVinci and Michealangelo, to"

Khajuraho Experience: Khajuraho has for long been a 'banned' place of visit for the upper class Hindus, mainly because of open depiction of various sexual poses. However, when I went there for the first time, after dropping all my inhibitions, I had a totally different experience. I focussed on the art and sculpting skills of the craftsmen who made such splendid images of normal human lifecycles. I thought they were screaming out to prudes like us - 'Hey, dont run away from us, we are only showing you normal human activity akin to eating and sleeping'. It seems that only middle-aged foreigners visit this place, nowadays. This place is a must see for all ages of Indians with an attitude to appreciate art and learn how to drop your inhibitions and taboos about sex. As luck would have it, we visited Khajuraho when it was raining. The locals told me this was the first time they had rains in 5 years. So, I rejoiced with them.
Food, sight-seeing and shopping: The food was very good at the Ramada Hotel, where we stayed. Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner. The food available at the local restaurants, around the temples, is of questionable quality. Better to stick to the food at the hotel where you are staying.
Activities & things to do: On the average, it takes atleast 16 hours to see all the temples, depending upon the details you wish to take in. However, since there is a lot of walking and the weather at this time (september) is a bit warm, we split our sightseeing into two 8 hour sessions over two days. The sound-and-light show at Khajuraho
Travel tips, How to reach, travel warnings etc: We went by Rajdhani from Bangalore to Jhansi. The train arrived at 1am on the third day. Our travel agent had arranged a nice A/C car to take us to a hotel in Orchha. Next day, after sightseeing the palaces in Orchha, we left at 12 noon and arrived in Khajuraho at 5pm. In between, there was a lunch stop at a very nice Coffee Shop Restaurant cum Gift Shop, about 60 km from Khajuraho.

"Khajuraho - Small but charming destination"

Khajuraho Experience: A small place, yet so charming . The temples are undoubtedly out of the world. The light and sound show is also not to be missed and the rickshaw rides.......... bicycle hire are other main ingredients for the trip.
Food, sight-seeing and shopping: We had all our meals in the hotel as we were not sure of what we will get, as we could hardly find any restaurant. But we got some aalo parathas packed for our return journey and they were too good, as the direct train from Delhi to Khajuraho doesn't have a pantry. You can get some beautiful crafts made locally ( or made in china :) )and most importantly a book about the Khajuraho temples .
Activities & things to do: We were there for 3 days, and I guess its enough time for Khajuraho. We visited all the temples, witnessed the light and sound show. We also went to the Raneh waterfalls which is called as Grand Canyon of India. Its really Huge and the view is breathtaking. The best part of our journey was the open air gypsy that took us to the waterfalls.
Travel tips, How to reach, travel warnings etc: We went from Delhi, took the straight overnight train and reached Khajuraho in the morning. On the way back we started in the evening and reached back Delhi early morning, quite a comfortable and enjoyable journey!!

"Amazin'"

Khajuraho Experience: Beautiful place, must see - do not listen to people who say that you should not take children along!
Food, sight-seeing and shopping: Raja cafe op the western temple group has great ambience, great food and great prices. The service though is a little slow. We stayed at Radisson and the experience was heavenly.
Activities & things to do: The temples, Pandav falls (check with the concierge if there is water), panna mines
Travel tips, How to reach, travel warnings etc: We drove down from Gwalior

"Most underrated destination"

Khajuraho Experience: Khajuraho though a small village with just the temple as attraction was thronging with foreign tourists who are there on the circuit from Varanasi to Agra. We got a feeling we were in a wrong place as there were very few Indian tourists. The impression among Indians generally is that Khajuraho is all about Kamasutra, which is not true.
Food, sight-seeing and shopping: The hotels in the town generally cater to foreign tourists, and have European and Japanese dishes. Most popular is Raja Cafe, near the Western group of temple. There are a few all vegetarian hotels like Agarwal's lunch home. There are a handful of three and four star hotels which have a range of restaurants though. Shopping is mainly for artifacts and bronze/wooden statues of sculptures. There is the Mrignayanee, the M.P. govt showrooms.
Activities & things to do: The entire activity in this town is around the temples. The temples are well maintained, though no deities are installed and no prayers can be done. The sound and light show is a must see and so is the museum outside the Western group of temples. The Eastern and Southern group of temples have repetitive sculptures and can be visited if there is time.
Travel tips, How to reach, travel warnings etc: The best time of the year to visit is October to March, when the weather is pleasant. The summers are too hot and not good for sightseeing. Air is the best way to reach. There are daily flights from Delhi of Indian and Jet. Soon Kingfisher too will be starting services. A rail line is expected in 2008 to come right into the town from Jhansi and should improve the connectivity.
