Best Season / Best Time to Visit Lachung
Lachung is a little Tibetan village situated in the northern part of Sikkim. Perched at an altitude of 9,600 ft. above sea level, the place is rich in natural beauty dotted with waterfalls, streams and panoramic view of snow-clad mountains. Located near the Indo-Chinese border, the village is nearly 110 km away from Gangtok, the capital of Sikkim.
Since it is located at a high altitude in the North East Himalayas, Lachung experiences typical alpine climate characterised by cool moderate summer and cold snowy winter. The area receives occasional showers throughout the year apart from the normal monsoon season.
Summer season in Lachung is pleasant and moderate with average temperature varying from 10?celsius to 20?Celsius. It starts from the month of March and lasts till May. The place is literally adorned with colourful rhododendrons during summer and is a major tourist attraction. Summer season is also an ideal time to visit Lachung.
Sikkim receives heavy rainfall all through the year due to its proximity to the Bay of Bengal. Lachung being in the northern part of the state receives lesser rainfall compared to the other districts. It usually rains from the month of May to October though it reaches its peak in the month of July. Occasional showers are also common ? a main characteristic of mountain climate.
Winter season in Lachung is extremely cold with average temperature varying from 10?Celsius to as low as -2?Celsius. Visibility is limited due to constant fog and there is heavy snowfall. In spite of the severe climatic conditions the place witnesses a heavy inflow of tourists during the winter season in order to admire the snow covered landscape.
October to June comprising summer as well as winter is the best time to visit Lachung. September to December is perfect to get a clear glimpse of the snow-capped Himalayas.
