Lunglei is located in the south-central region of the Indian state of Mizoram. The biggest district in Mizoram, Lunglei is spread over an area of 4,538 sq km. Lunglei is surrounded by Mamit and Serchhip districts to the north and Lawngtlai and Saiha districts to the south. To the east of the district lies Myanmar and to the west lies Bangladesh.
A popular tourist destination, Lunglei means, 'the bridge of rock’ in the regional dialect. It derived its name from a bridge like rock along the banks of River Ngashish. Situated under the shadows of the Himalayas, Lunglei is one of the densely populated regions in the Mizo Hills. The destination is situated in proximity to the main city of Aizawl.
Flora, dense bamboo woods, beautiful gorges and gushing rivers are the attractions of the region. Khawnglung Wildlife Sanctuary, a famous forest reserve close to Lunglei, is a natural reserve that provides habitat to various animals. One of the largest halls in Mizoram, known as Saikuti Hall, that hosts various concerts and celebrations, is among the popular attractions.
Mim Kut, Chapchar Kut, Pawl Kut and Christmas are some of the festivals that are celebrated in Lunglei with great fervour. Some of the popular dance forms in the region are Cheraw, Khuallam and Chheih Lam that are performed during festivities.
Located 235 km south of Aizawl, the destination is well connected by buses. The nearest airbase to the town is Lengpui Airport, which is connected with Aizawl Airport. The closest railhead to the destination is Silchar Railway Station, which is situated at a distance of 229 km from Lunglei.
Climatic conditions remain pleasant throughout the year. Although, the best time to visit Lunglei is during winters.

Sightseeing in Lunglei is very few, mostlywildlife sanctuaries. They include Zobawk, Kawnzawl and wildlife sanctuaries like Khawnglung Wildlife Sanctuary, Sazsa Wildlife Sanctuary and Thorangtlang Wildlife Sanctuary. Other than these natural attractions for the animal lovers Lunglei also houses one of the biggest halls in the region by the name of Saikuti Hall.
Located about 170 km from the region of Aizawl in the district of Mizoram, Khawnglung Wildlife Sanctuary covers a total area of 35 sq km at an altitude of 1300 m above sea level. Some of the common species found here include animals like wild boar, hoolock, gibbon, serow, barking deer, sambar deer etc.
160 km from the region of Aizawl is the Saza Wildlife Sanctuary, which lies on the western most part of the Mizoram District. This Wildlife Sanctuary covers a total area of 15 sq km.
Thorangtlang Wildlife Sanctuary is located in the district of Lunglei and is about 240 km from the region of Aizawl on the western part of Mizoram. The total area covered by Thorangtlang Wildlife Sanctuary is about 50 sq km and a major part of the wildlife sanctuary acts as a passage for the wild elephants that migrate from Bangladesh.
Saikuti Hall is the place where most of the religious ceremonies and social gatherings of the place are held. A museum was also established in the hall to showcase the skills of the local painters of the place.
