Malpe Info

  • State: Karnataka
  • Famous for/as: Beach
  • Altitude: 3 m
Malpe is one of the natural ports located at about six kilometers to the west of Udupi, in the state of Karnataka, India. The place is a famous port town and fishing harbor on the Karnataka coast. At the mouth of the Udyavara river, marks the beginning of this small scenic place Malpe.

The suburban city Udupi is administered by Udupi City Municipality. There is mainly three languages spoken here Tulu, Kannada and Konkani. This picturesque beach is the prime attraction of the port, Malpe. It is popular among both locals and tourists and is generally crowded.

St. Mary's Islands is one of the main attractions at Malpe, with its pristine secluded beach. People can also take a boat ride to St Mary's Island for some fascinating volcanic rock formations. Malpe is formed by a unique formation of volcanic rocks which are vertical hexagonal rocks. It is a big collection of islands found in different sizes. It is therefore called a beach flanked by Islands.

Malpe also contributes to the religious importance as the Balarama and Ananteshwara temples attract devotees. Basavappa Nayaka of Bidanur built a fort on the island of Daria-Bahadurgad on the off shores of Malpe.

There are many shrines in the name of many Gods. The port has a never ending stretch of soft sand, untouched by the commercialization with three rocky islands adjoining its western part. Daria-Bahadurgad, on the northern most ends, Daria-Gadara-Kallu in the middle and Kari Illada Kallu in the southern most part are the three islands. The main industry of Malpe is the fishing industry and tile manufacturing which contributes in the economy of the country.

To the south of Malpe lies the ideal picnic spot called Virgin Beach. Many pilgrims come to offer prayers at the temple of Vadabhandeshwara which enshrines the idol of Balarama, established by Sri Madhwacharya. The place also offers the visitors an island on the western side all made up of rocks.

The amazing view of the place sets up a perfect mood for an unforgettable trip. The place is characterized by silver white sand beach and is secluded from most of the modern areas around. A trip to Malpe is incomplete without a visit to a quite fascinating harbor which is also a ship building centre. The best months to enjoy Malpe are from October to March.

"Superb sunset View at Malpe"

  • 4.5/7

If you need to enjoy your day near the water, especially near the sea and that too in Mangalore or Udupi area, Malpe is the place. The Malpe sea has a beautiful scenery and an excellent sea. The sea here is not that rough allowing people to enter the sea with less precaution. You will enjoy playing in the sea. You can even visit St Mary's Island taking the coastal boats through the sea.

"Picture perfect beach"

  • 6.0/7
  • Posted Sep 29, 2015
At a distance of about 500 kms from Bengaluru in the district of Udupi, this is an ideal place for any beach bum. The place is about 5 km further down the road from Udupi and the famous Mahatma Gandhi statue greets you at the entrance of the beach with the tides hitting the beach. The beach has a lot of activities like the banana boat ride, parasailing, the jetski and many more (which I cannot recall). The location is brilliant and the crowd is pretty decent to go along with your better half.

The St Mary's island is a must visit from the beach as its just a 20 min boat ride.

"A best beach to visit with nice attractions"

  • 7.0/7
  • Posted Aug 30, 2015
This beach is very safe. Clean and White sand. Except Rainy season any day of the year is good to visit this beach. Saint Mary Island. About 15 kilometres. Boat ride is available between October to Mid May. Must visit Balram Temple (1 KM), Krishna Temple surrounded by Asta Math (10 KM), Kapu Beach (16 KM), Tonse & Hoode Beach (5 KM). Brown Rice with Fish Curry & Fish Fry. Fish is fresh from the Sea. Adventurous sports like Water ride, Banana Boat Ride, guided Para gliding Boat Ride. Ratosav at Krishna Temple at Udupi city. Not to venture to the sea if high wind warning is issued. Travel by Road is the best.

"Heaven on the earth"

Malpe is famous for beaches. I travelled many times but staying in Paradise lodge and spending time in the sea shore is memorable moments. You will feel like a remote place were you can enjoy without any much disturbance from the outsiders. From here St Marys island is very near and there is good transport facility to reach there.

"Panoramic!!!!"

  • 6.5/7
  • Posted May 1, 2015
One of the most panoramic beaches of our Country. Facing the Arabian sea, is a small white sanded beach lined with coconut trees. We went in the afternoon, which is definitely not the time of the day at the beach

The ferry ride across the water was awesome. It was slight tough boarding the ferry as the waves pushed the ferry back towards me while I boarded. But then it was interesting. St. Mary's island is filled with basilica rocks and crabs and provides a nice photographic arena. A calm and quite island surrounded by waters, its a beauty to watch

Cleanliness is awesome. Ferries start only if about 15 people are present hence better to avoid on weekdays as crowd is very minimal.

We 5 guys went to this beach via boat it's a wonderful experience and the atmosphere are simply superb in the evening to have good cool breeze in the summer. Watching the sunset over the west coast was a great experience. I recommend this place on summer season to play water volley ball in the sea.

"The cleanest beach with lots of fun"

  • 5.0/7
  • Posted Jul 27, 2014
This place has got one of the cleanest beaches in Karnataka. Seeing sunset from the beach is a delight. Also the boat ride to St Mary's Island is a must. There are many resorts on the beach itself and small stalls offer tasty chats. The nearest city Udupi has very good restaurants if you are looking for lunch or dinner.
Many adventure activities like boat riding, banana ride and paragliding will keep you busy during the day. We played volleyball on the beach as there are a few courts set up by the beach. Have lunch in Udupi and leave for the beach. Then take a boat ride to the St Mary's Island.

Malpe is a beach on the western coast which is not much big but it is a nice place to visit. Here you can enjoy a lot. There is a resort Paradise isle which is very good. There are a group of islands called St. Marry where you can go by boat from Malpe. Nearest city is Udupi which has a railway station. Manipal University is about 10 km from Malpe.
