Mandarmani Info

  • State: West Bengal
  • Famous for/as: Beach
A beach resort, Mandarmani, is located in south-west Bengal in India. Situated in the East Midnapore district, the destination is a fast developing seaside resort village. Situated at a distance of 14 km from Chaulkhola and near the popular tourist destinations of Digha and Shankarpur, the destination is fast becoming one of the most developed tourist attractions of West Bengal.

Things to do in Mandarmani

This small town is known for its sea beach along with activities like surfing, ATV rides, jet skiing, banana boat rides etc. The most famous attraction of Mandarmani is the 13 km long motorable Mandarmani Beach. Prior to setting out for a drive on the beach, it is better to find out the timings of high tides as water levels might rise up to the beach level.

The place is also known for its beautiful sunrise and sunset views that can be best enjoyed along the beach. At a distance of 5-6 km from the main beach is The Delta which is ideal for taking a stroll. However, the area is best avoided after dark. Numerous red crabs can be seen on this stretch of the beach.

Food & Shopping in Mandarmani

Since Mandarmani is a beach destination, it is a good place to try some fish and other seafood. Fresh fish and crabs can be bought from the local fishermen. Most resorts serve local Bengali cuisine. Prawns and crabs are the specialties of the region. Apart from the resorts, food is also available at small eateries and shacks on the beach. These mostly sell tea and snacks but food is also available provided orders are placed beforehand. But the price of food available in Mandarmani is on the higher side. For shoppers, there are objects made of different types of sea shells and oysters. These range from jewellery items like necklaces and earrings to decorative objects like wall hangings and mirrors.

Travelling to Mandarmani

Mandarmani is at a distance of over 160 km from Kolkata. Buses are available from Esplanade and Howrah to reach Mandarmani. Buses going to Digha need to be boarded with the stoppage being at Chaulkhola, after Contai. The 14 km from Chaulkhola to Mandarmani can be covered by car, cycle rickshaw or auto rickshaw.  State Transport buses cost INR 76 while deluxe coaches cost around INR 100-110. Volvos depart from Gariahat, in South Kolkata, in the morning. It takes about three hours to cover the distance. Cars can also be hired from Kolkata to Mandarmani and they cost around INR 12-INR 60 per kilometre depending upon the type of car. The nearest rail station to Mandarmani is at Contai, about 17 km away and the nearest airport is at Kolkata.

Travelling within Mandarmani

The best way to explore Mandarmani is either by foot or by hiring a bike or bicycle. Considering tourists visit the destination for its beaches, there is not much of travelling expected.

Accommodation options in Mandarmani

Hotel options in Mandarmani range for budget hotels to high-end resorts. The town also has a few options for the green traveller. Tourists are advised to book a sea facing hotel as it will provide spectacular views of the sunrise or sunset, which the town is famous for. Tourists can also book one of the many attractive holiday packages in Mandarmani to enjoy a perfect beach vacation.

Monsoon season in the region commences in the month of June and extends till the month of September, while the winter season stretches from December to February. However, it can be crowded in winter with people from nearby places flocking there for a weekend getaway. The best time to visit Mandarmani is the intermediary months between the monsoon and winter seasons.

"Weekends in beach, thousands of crabs around" new review

  • 6/7
  • Posted 7 days ago
A clean and tidy beach to spend your weekends with family or friends. There are no stones on the beaches therefore you won't get hurt while enjoying. There is a lot for the crab lovers as there are thousands of crabs on the beaches(at a distance of couple of km from the tourist beach). If you can manage to get a room at rose valley resort it will be an icing on the cake. Go ahead and enjoy.

Mandarmani is one of the virgin & crowd less beach of India. In beach side facility of many rides like jet ski, banana ride, speed boat & paragliding on bargain. Evening sunset is the most attraction point here. There were many resorts & hotels but rose valley is best. We enjoyed water park, toy train, rope way, paddle boat &many more activity inside rose valley. Evening view of beach is awesome, overall nice place to relax 2-3 days.

"Red crabs in abundance" new review

  • 6/7
  • Posted 4 weeks ago
Mandarmani is a must visit for people who are seeking a quiet holiday with their loved ones. Famous for its motorable beach, there is more fun to it when the tides are high everyday after 11 AM. So, In the morning, we went for a nice walk along the beach, then we came back to hotel, Sonar Bangla(our hotel was right on the beach), had our breakfast and then again sat on a bench facing the sea sipping a coconut.

For Lunch, we went to a nearby shack, (one has to order food in advance, preferably by 10-10. 30- if you dont want the regular fare) had our pre-ordered lip-smacking crab and tiger prawns cooked in local style with rice.

After 3, the tide goes down and there is lot of water sports offering. But we headed to a place called Mohona which had clean white sand and red crabs in abundance. The local kids were digging up the holes and taking crabs out to show us holding them in their hands without doing any harm to the crabs. This was a splendid experience. After an hour or so, back to our hotel, we took rest for some time and played badminton within the hotel premises.

Though Mandarmani is slightly dearer in terms of hotel accomodation than the other old and famous holiday destination, Digha, probably that makes it better. As the crowd is less and better behaved here.

"Awesome Desitnation, A must-visit place"

  • 5/7
  • Posted 2 months ago
This place has sea with a drivable beach.. Which is very unique in itself. The right time to visit this place is during summer or autumn. The place is quiet and pleasant. There one can enjoy para-gliding or scooter-boating. The hotels are really good and there is 24-hr power backup facilities.

In the morning: The sun rise is amazing to watch. Also towards the mohana which is about 2km away gives an exotic view. The red-Crabs come out of there holes and cover the beach.

"A decent place to relax"

  • 5/7
  • Posted 3 months ago
Mandarmani is a good place to hang out with friends. This beach is very calm and beautiful. You can drive through the beach. But this place is slightly expensive than other beaches in West Bengal as their is no electricity. Every thing runs either on diesel or generator. But yes if you are looking to take a break for 2 to 3 days with no headache of expense. This is the ultimate escapade!

"A perfect holiday destination for beach lovers"

  • 4/7
  • Posted Jan 6, 2015
This destination is near to Kolkata (only 200 KM from Kolkata), by road it would be good. Its also a good destination for beach lovers. I enjoyed more because of the weather. Weather was so pleasant not so sunny not so hot. Cold breeze was blowing & I enjoyed the road journey. Road was also good. It was NH. There is a less traffic, less pollution & noise.

"Unexplored horizon: Thrill of beach driving"

  • 6/7
  • Posted Dec 30, 2014
Around 163 Km from Kolkata lies an unexplored paradise with more than 13 Km of continuous beach which is accessible to cars entirety. This is the longest Indian beach drive and arguably one of the longest beaches in India which can easily compete with the Marina Beach with respect to length.

The sight of red crabs, the beautiful Mohana or River's meet of Jalda river on one side with the Bay of Bengal and Champai river with the same on the other side of the beach, the awesome resorts facing the sea and the gentle waves - all these contribute to the outstanding experience travelers have here.

Since this place is unexplored to a good extent and less renowned, the roads leading to this sea beach are not great till now.
A personal advice to travelers would be to taste the fine crabs here. Travelers wishing to have a luxury packed stay can opt for Sun City Resort,The Sana Beach or Hotel Sonar Bangla and travelers hoping to have a homely and economic stay can opt for resorts like Hotel Mainak.

The place would have grown to be a very good tourist destination had the government done more for its development like other states in the nation. Water sports is limited here but can be improved. Another tip for the travelers would be to go to Mandarmani in groups since there are limited activities in the beach after sunset.

Definitely try driving from one end of the beach to the other as it is an awesome experience and if possible visit nearby places like Tajpur. I can guarantee a good beach drive and a peaceful stay in Mandarmani but at the same time I wish the government would do more to help develop tourism in this fine destination.

"A place to relax"

  • 7/7

That was the most beautiful time in my life. If not then one of the most memorable two days. The beautiful beach and the beautiful beach resort was amazing. Chatting and having a drink with my friends there was amazing. We did a lot of fun there. I again want a break from my boring study life and go there for couple of days.

"A good place to visit"

  • 6/7
  • Posted Oct 29, 2014
It was great for s a weekend away from Kolkata. Road is good upto Dadanpatrabar, last 5 km is patchy and not good during monsoon. Rest all are good about this place. Sana Beach Resort is the best place to stay here. Sea beach is average and no such restaurant out there, but the hotels keep adequate facilities.

"A nice place with amazing beaches"

  • 7/7
  • Posted Oct 10, 2014
First of all, it is a place for everyone. If you are comfortable wetting yourself in water (salty sea water) and like to witness the calm beaches, then that's the place for you. The view for the beach is amazing. Its nearly impossible to drive through during high sea tides or rough weather with the sea water clogging the entire beach. It is an amazing place.
