Mandarmani Info

  • State: West Bengal
  • Famous for/as: Beach
  • District: East Midnapore
A beach resort, Mandarmani, is located in south-west Bengal in India. Situated in the East Midnapore district, the destination is a fast developing seaside resort village. Situated at a distance of 14 km from Chaulkhola and near the popular tourist destinations of Digha and Shankarpur, the destination is fast becoming one of the most developed tourist attractions of West Bengal.

Things to do in Mandarmani

This small town is known for its sea beach along with activities like surfing, ATV rides, jet skiing, banana boat rides etc. The most famous attraction of Mandarmani is the 13 km long motorable Mandarmani Beach. Prior to setting out for a drive on the beach, it is better to find out the timings of high tides as water levels might rise up to the beach level.

The place is also known for its beautiful sunrise and sunset views that can be best enjoyed along the beach. At a distance of 5-6 km from the main beach is The Delta which is ideal for taking a stroll. However, the area is best avoided after dark. Numerous red crabs can be seen on this stretch of the beach.

Food & Shopping in Mandarmani

Since Mandarmani is a beach destination, it is a good place to try some fish and other seafood. Fresh fish and crabs can be bought from the local fishermen. Most resorts serve local Bengali cuisine. Prawns and crabs are the specialties of the region. Apart from the resorts, food is also available at small eateries and shacks on the beach. These mostly sell tea and snacks but food is also available provided orders are placed beforehand. But the price of food available in Mandarmani is on the higher side. For shoppers, there are objects made of different types of sea shells and oysters. These range from jewellery items like necklaces and earrings to decorative objects like wall hangings and mirrors.

Travelling to Mandarmani

Mandarmani is at a distance of over 160 km from Kolkata. Buses are available from Esplanade and Howrah to reach Mandarmani. Buses going to Digha need to be boarded with the stoppage being at Chaulkhola, after Contai. The 14 km from Chaulkhola to Mandarmani can be covered by car, cycle rickshaw or auto rickshaw.  State Transport buses cost INR 76 while deluxe coaches cost around INR 100-110. Volvos depart from Gariahat, in South Kolkata, in the morning. It takes about three hours to cover the distance. Cars can also be hired from Kolkata to Mandarmani and they cost around INR 12-INR 60 per kilometre depending upon the type of car. The nearest rail station to Mandarmani is at Contai, about 17 km away and the nearest airport is at Kolkata.

Travelling within Mandarmani

The best way to explore Mandarmani is either by foot or by hiring a bike or bicycle. Considering tourists visit the destination for its beaches, there is not much of travelling expected.

Accommodation options in Mandarmani

Hotel options in Mandarmani range for budget hotels to high-end resorts. The town also has a few options for the green traveller. Tourists are advised to book a sea facing hotel as it will provide spectacular views of the sunrise or sunset, which the town is famous for. Tourists can also book one of the many attractive holiday packages in Mandarmani to enjoy a perfect beach vacation.

Monsoon season in the region commences in the month of June and extends till the month of September, while the winter season stretches from December to February. However, it can be crowded in winter with people from nearby places flocking there for a weekend getaway. The best time to visit Mandarmani is the intermediary months between the monsoon and winter seasons.

"Location is good and beach is clean." new review

Ideal getaway from Kolkata. Good roads. Relaxed environment and secluded beach ⛱. Good for morning and evening walks barefoot. Safe waters. Kids will be safe. Royal pani, packet snacks and soft drinks are generally available. Take care of tanning like any other beach ⛱. Carry your beach caps and garden umbrella ☔. Above all enjoy the serene village atmosphere & the still Virgin beaches ...

Away from city's hustle-bustle, quiet, yet beautiful. Nearest beach from town is Digha but it is often over crowded. Hence Mandarmani is an ideal destination for those who look for quality time with their family.

Not much of outdoor activities available there - except few water sports such as speed boat riding, jet ski, etc.

Sunny day, must carry umbrella, cream, camera. Hotel room, food was too expensive, 2500/- minimum cost for one night stay here in Mandarmoni. Shopping here is luxurious, even shopping centers are not here.

"Do not go to Mandarmani"

  • 1.0/7

Please do not go to Mandarmani. Digha is far better than from Mandarmoni.

From food to hotels everything is very overpriced here.

Natural beauty is destroyed by mushrooming hotels. After Sunset the total area sinks into darkness. There are no lights on the beach, only the Sounds of the generators can be heard.

"An above average beach"

  • 4.0/7
  • Posted Aug 29, 2016
Mandarmoni is an above average beach of Bengal ... Like many other tourism projects, this place receives Very little care from the Government, despite its huge potential to generate revenue. There are several pros and cons of this beach destination:
1. A relatively cleaner beach with huge expanse
2. Good quality road access.
3. Not unnecessarily congested.
1. No police protection can be found around. For any mishap- think of only God to save you. There are no billboards anywhere displaying emergency contact numbers.
2. A potential paradise for drunkards and hooligans, especially at odd hours, as there is no administrative vigilance. Most of the miscreants are the boys only gangs of tourists. Especially troublesome if you are travelling with family and ladies are there in the group. However, it's still better than Digha, the highly congested and oldest sea beach of Bengal. No ATM machine around. The nearest ATM is about 7km away. You gotta carry good cash around for yourself.
4. There is only rudimentary electricity supply from the Government. The resorts rely heavily on their own generator machines for power. This creates problems during summer months, when the AC machine in your room shall have to be switched off for four hours per day.
5. There are no official divers at the beach with emergency preparedness. It's totally orphan. So if any case of drowning happens, only the people on spot are the last ray of hope.
6. No good quality medical facilities are available in 150 km range. So a medical catastrophe can be a nightmare for anyone.
7. The existing water sports available is limited to a short boating trip of hardly 10 mins duration. That too, the boats or the guides do not hold valid licenses. Ride the boats at your own risk.
8. Rampant consumption of alcohol amongst the locals. One of our boat guides was smelling heavily if country liquor.
9. No other places to visit. No other major tourist attractions around, like amusement park and all.
10. No structured public transport facility from the nearest bus stop to the beach. Hence be prepared to shell off large amount of money on transport.

"Best hotel"

  • 5.5/7

The Location is very good. It is quite far from the main road. Till it is on the sea beach. Best rooms are sea-side cottage. 101&102 are very nice for the scenic view. In august it is best to visit for friends, family and couple also. All the staff are very well - Manured. Food quality is next to awesome. There is no any shopping area near by. Quite peaceful. So you may run out from the noise of the city. That is the main attraction. Best place for relaxing for 1-2 nights.

"Excellent destination for a relaxed weekend"

  • 6.0/7
  • Posted Aug 14, 2016
About 180km from Kolkata, Mandarmani offers an excellent destination for a relaxing weekend trip. Long Beach, plenty of hotels on the beach front, and reasonably good road from Kolkata adds to the convenience.
Before booking hotels, make sure you go through reviews about the hotel as there can be a great variance in quality and service at hotels at the same price point.

"A private beach far from the maddening crowd."

  • 6.0/7
  • Posted Aug 4, 2016
Though I have visited Digha a number of times, this was my first visit to Mandarmani. The first thing which struck me was the exclusiveness of the beach. At early mornings and evenings/nights we had a feeling that this was a very private beach and we had the rare privilege of enjoying the same without any disturbance at all.
The hotel was good and their service was wonderful.
There are many other beaches nearby namely Tajpur, Shankarpur and Talseri.
There is also a very old and popular Shiva temple at Chandaneswar which is about 40 km from Mandarmani.
You can enjoy many seafoods here. We tried and enjoyed the crab masala special and also Hilsa fish in a restaurant in New Digha.
You can also shop for many interesting local products made from seashells, ropes, nets, mats etc at the market at New Digha and elsewhere also.
