About Manikaran Tourism

Manikaran is a small town situated some 45 km from Kullu in Himachal Pradesh. Towards the northern side of Manikaran, there is the Harinder Mountain and on the south is the Parvati River. The place is very important and holy for both Sikhs and Hindus due to the gurudwaras and temples that dot Manikaran.

Manikaran or ‘Jewel of the Ear’ is often associated to Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati and according to an epic story, a precious jewel of Goddess Parvati got swept away in the waters and Lord Shiva asked his attendants to find the jewel. When the jewel could not be found, that enraged Lord Shiva and his third eye opened that resulted in earthly turmoil in the waters, from where many precious stones came out. It is from this story that the place got its name.

One of the major attractions of the region is the temple of Lord Ramchandra. According to the local priests of the village, the idol of Lord Ramchandra was brought from Ayodhya and was erected by the Raja of Kulu. An idol of Lakshman was also there which is now missing. The idol of Goddess Sita is there on the left hand side of Lord Ramchandra. The history of the temple is engraved on one of the walls.

Other attractions include the Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji Gurudwara and the temple of Lord Shiva. The gurudwara at Manikaran is considered one of the holiest by Sikhs. According to the 'Twarikh Guru Khalsa' or Janam Sakhi by Giani Gian Singh, Guru Nanak Dev visited this place with followers or five ‘Piaras.’ The Kulant Pith, a holy place for pilgrimage is perhaps the most esteemed of all Sikh ‘Piths’ in the country.

The hot springs of Manikaran also attract a lot of tourists who come here to drink water or take a bath because there is a popular belief that, drinking water of this place will help people in attaining Moksha. The hot springs of Manikaran have uranium and other radioactive minerals which have curative properties.

The closest airport to Manikaran is located in a town called Bhuntur, which is around 30 minutes away. Taxis can be availed from the airport to reach Manikaran. The nearest railhead is Pathankot Railway Station, at a distance of 150 km.

"Manikaran - Heaven on Earth" new review

Manikaran Experience: The place I want to mention is called Tosh which is 10 km trek/ road route from Manikaran. Its a weekend getaway from Delhi but not so popular, but thronged by Israelis and foreigners. A perfect place to travel with your loved ones or alone and view is breath taking. Leaves you with a mind of relaxation, peace and content to be midst of the beauty of nature. To describe the place it is mountains, snow and greenery with wooden cottages, and warmth of the village of Tosh.
Food, sight-seeing and shopping: Sight seeing comprises of walks and treks up the mountains, lots of nameless waterfalls, the local market and for food you get mainly mixed cuisine which caters to the needs of the Israelis. So one would have salads, breads and pita bread with humus and different kinds of preparation of chicken and vegetables. You also get unique pizzas and varied kinds of breakfast menus.
Activities & things to do: A walk along the mountain roads/ or narrow trails, relaxing under the warm sun and on the grass, walking to where there is snow and playing with it, is ideal to escape to from the heat of Delhi. Takes 10 hours to Bhuntar and then 4 hours to Tosh from there. The road for vehicles has come up recently but the 1km trek (if you opt for) from Bersaini (6 km from Manikaran) is beautiful amongst the mountains and narrow forest roads
Travel tips, How to reach, travel warnings etc: To trek that 1km is easy and splendid. Everyone should attempt the same. Reaching there is simple and cost for staying is only Rs 200 for wooden rooms / cottages. The view right outside your window is snow capped peaks.

"An experiance to share"

Manikaran Experience: Situated at about 1700 m, I been visiting Manikaran every time in spectacular Kullu valley since 1991, have stayed overnight at HPTDC hotel Parvati (was destroyed about 5 years ago in a massive earthquake, don’t know why they not to constructed it back!!) experience the calm and serenity. A very serene and soothing place hidden in forest full of cedar and snow caped hills, on the banks of river Parvati. Hot water springs flow along with Parvati river, and also thought to have curative powers. The place immense religious importance for both Sikhs and Hindus. A very small market with very few hotels. One can stay in Kasol, which is about 5 Kms before Manikaran from Bhuntar.
Food, sight-seeing and shopping: Some food joints, for snacks. Shops mainly have usual tourist stuff. Langar at Gurubwara is a must, the visit is not complete without it. Ram Temple, Gurudwara and Lord Shiva temple
Activities & things to do: One could move on to a no. of tracks from Manikaran and around. Stay at Kasol, about 5 Km before. a beautiful place on the bank of River Parvati, surrounded by cedars, and white sand. Trout angling is an experience in itself.
Travel tips, How to reach, travel warnings etc: Manikaran is about 35 Kms from Bhuntar, Bhuntar cn be reached by road (NH - 21) from there take a taxi or local roadways bus to Manikaran. The road has imporved a lot over last couple of years and bus service is also more frequent. Bhuntar has an Airport and there are two flight daily from Delhi,

Tourist places in Manikaran

Manikaran has many temples and hot springs associated with the holiness of Indian mythology. Pilgrims from all over India come here to go sightseeing and on a pilgrimage. One of the most renowned temples in this area is the Lord Ramchandra Temple, which has a myth that this temple was brought to Manikaran by Lord Ram and was set up by Raka Kullu, inside which the idol of Sita stands on the left hand side of Lord Ram.

Another temple that is equally popular is the Temple of Lord Shiva, where many pilgrims gather round the year. The temple is slightly titled as a result of the earthquake of 1905. There are some hot springs in Manikaran that are considered holy, as bathing in the river and drinking its water can help people attain salvation. This spring water is believed to cure illnesses. However, recently some radioactive minerals and uranium have been found in the water.

Other popular attractions are the Harinder Mountain and Parvati River located to the north and south of the town of Manikaran respectively. There is the Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji Gurudwara, which was constructed to commemorate the visit of Guru Nanak Dev with his 5 followers or ‘Piaras’ including Bhai Mardana.

This visit to Manikaran is mentioned in the Bhai Bala Janam Sakhi or ‘Twarikh Guru Khalsa’ written by Giani Gian Singh. Guru Nanak Dev Ji came to Manikaran after passing through the places of Gurdaspur, Palampur, Kalanaur, Trilokinath, Kangra, Dasuya, Kullu, Mandi and Bijli Mahadev to spread his message.

The Vishnu Kund at the Kulant Pith is one of the most superior ‘piths’ in the country, where Lord Shankara has been said to live in pleasure. The water in the Vishnu Kund of Manikaran is said to have the power to free one from evil.
