Nagore is a town in  Nagapattinam District of Tamil Nadu.. This small town near  the Bay of Bengal lies at a distance of 16 km towards the south of Karaikal and 4 km north of Nagapattinam. The Chinese traveller Hiuen Tsang  referred to the destination as Buddha Vihar in his book. The destination was also ruled by the Pallava King Rajasimha during 690-728A D.

Nagore is identified as a pilgrim destination as it has a renowned pilgrim centre Nagore Dargah. It is a five century old Islamic shrine and is the chief attraction of the town. The Islamic shrine was constructed as a tribute to Meeran Sahib Abdul Qadir Shahul Hamid Badshah.

Fine architecture and craftsmanship is reflected in the domed arches and minarets of the dargah. The highlight of the dargah is the largest tower known as Periya Minara, which stands at a height of 131 feet. The dargah also has a holy tank in the premises, whose water is believed to have curative properties.

Along with the Nagore Dargah, there are several ancient testimonies in the golden dome building. Seeralamman Temple is another revered place in the fisherman area. Visitors can also be a part of the popular Kandhuri festival which is celebrated annually with great enthusiasm in Nagore during the months of October and November.

Travellers can reach the town by various modes of transportation, as it is well connected with several parts of Tamil Nadu. There is a railway junction in the town that has frequent connections with Tiruchirapalli and Chennai. The international airport of Tiruchirapalli is the closest airbase to Nagore.

The township experiences a coastal climate due to proximity to the sea. The ideal time to travel to Nagore is between November and March when the temperature is low and is suitable for sightseeing.

Nagore is one of the weekend getaway options for travelers living in Karaikal and Velankanni.

I have visited Nagore Sheriff Dargah in Nagore last month with my family. We reached early morning by train. We have found there are many service apartments offered by local people. We found it cheap and nice we checked in. After getting freshed up we went straight down to dargah to offer prayers.

The town is small with main tourist attraction Dargah. You will find different types of food variety's outside dargah and small shopping zone. In the evening we went to beach which is 1 km away from town. Beach is low crowded but neat and clean enjoyed a lot.

After 2 days we went to near by town velankanni and visited famous church.

I have been to the Holy Nagore Dargah last week. Nagore Dargah is the shrine dedicated to Meeran Sahib Abdul Qadir Shahul Hamid Badshah which is one of the popular pilgrimage centre for muslims in Tamilnadu. The Dargah is standing as a proof of the harmonious co-existence of Hindu-Muslim communities.

The main campus at Nagore is enclosed by a compound wall, with four entrances, one each on the north, south east and west. The large tower called 'Periya Minara' stands at a height of 131 ft. The mortal remains of Meeran Sahib, his son Syed Mohd Yousuff and his daughter-in-law Saeeda Sultana Biwi are buried in the tombs situated in three separate chambers in a golden dome building. I made ziyarat in the tomb of Holy Meeran Sahib and I felt a good mental peace while coming out.

Food, sight-seeing and shopping: As a pilgrimage centre, there is no importance for food, sight seeing and shopping, but you can visit the beautiful sea shores.

Activities & things to do: You can make ziyarat at the tombs of these holy people.

Travel tips, How to reach, travel warnings etc: You can reach by train or bus from Thiruchirappalli or Thanjavur which are important stations to Nagapattinam and then to Nagore. You can also catch direct trains from Chennai and Ernakulam.
