Located in Shahid Bhagat Singh Nagar District in the state of Punjab, Nawanshehar is a municipal council. In addition, Nawanshehar also serves as the headquarters of Shahid Bhagat Singh Nagar District. This destination is situated along the banks of River Sutlej.
This place on the east is bounded by Roop Nagar district, while on the west lies district of Jalandhar. On the north, the destination is surrounded by Hoshiarpur, while on the south it shares its boundary with Ludhiana.
It is believed that this destination was constructed during the reign of Alauddin Khilji, who ruled the place from 1295 to 1316. It was built by Nausher Khan, who was the Afghan Military Chief of Alauddin Khilji army. Earlier, the place was named after him as Nausar, however with the passage of time; it was referred to as Nawanshehar. According to the history, it is said that most parts of the destination, including Rahon, Bhaddi and Jadla et al were under the proprietorship of the Ghorewaha Rajputs.
On 27th September, 2008, it was announced by the government of Punjab that for honouring Shahid Bhagat Singh, the place will be renamed as Shahid Bhagat Singh Nagar. This was done as this great freedom fighter belongs from this destination.
This destination is famous for the five forts or havelis built by Nausher Khan, which are also the major tourist attractions. Other than these, Baba Balraj temple, Gurudwara Charan Kanwal, Gurudwara NanakSar and Sanehi temple are the other prominent attractions of the destination.
Tourists can easily reach the destination with the availability of flights, trains and buses. The destination does not have its own airport and hence is served by Chandigarh Airport, which is located at a distance of 93.4 km from Nawanshehar. For tourists travelling from outside the country can board flights to Sri Guru Ram Dass Jee International Airport in Amritsar. This airport is located at a distance of 159 km from the destination.
Tourists can also reach the destination by trains, which are served by Nawanshehar Railway Station. This station is located at a distance of 1.5 km from the destination. Apart from flights and trains, buses are also available that can be boarded from Mohali to Nawanshehar.
The best time to visit this destination is during the winter season, which extends from the month of December to the month of February.

Sightseeing in the region of Nawanshehar consists mainly of Gurudwaras located in different areas. Gurudwara Nanaksar is located in the village Hakimpur, in the Tehsil Banga District of Nawanshehar. It is believed that Guru Hari Raj ji rested here, on his way to Kiratpur Sahib. It was Maharaja Ranjit Singh who built this Gurudwara here. There was a mausoleum built in the area, in the memory of Baba Banda Bahadur’s wife, which was removed later on due to the construction of other buildings in the Gurudwara.
Gurudwara Charan Kanwal was built by Maharaja Ranjit Singh, in the memory of Hargobindji, the sixth Guru of the Sikhs. The daughter of Sardar Dhanna Singh constructed a pond in front of the Gurudwara and also a separate langar house for the Gurudwara. The Gurudwara is now managed by SGPC.
Gurudwara Gurpalah is popular because of the fair that is held here every year, in the month of July. The Gurudwara is built at the place where one of the Sikh gurus stayed on his visit to Kiratpur Sahib. The Gurudwara by the name of Gurpartap, is located in the village by the name of Thana Behram.
Built in the year 1713, at the place where Guru Gar Raj is said to have stayed for few days, on his journey to Kiratpur Sahib, is the Har Rai Danda Sahib Gurudwara. The Gurudwara Shahidaan Urapar is the place where Sikh soldiers who died in battle, were cremated.
Gurudwara Shahidganj Talwandi is situated at the place where a battle was fought in 1767 and where the soldiers who died in battle, were cremated. Special ceremonies and rituals are held at the Gurudwara, on the birthdays of Sikh gurus, that are attended by many people. Gurudwara Tahli Sahib in Nawanshehar was built for the elder son of Guru Nanak Devji, Baba Shri Chand. Every year, the birthday of Baba Shri Chand is celebrated here by the locals as well as people coming from distant parts of Punjab. The devotees believe that Baba Shri Chand stayed and meditated here, for over 40 days. Gurudwara Manji Sahib is built on the place where Guru Teg Bahadurji stayed on his visit to Kiratpur Sahib and the guru was accompanied by Bhai Mati Das, on his visit.
Gurudwara Bhai Sikh of Nawanshehar is located in the village of Hiyala, in the lower Nawansheher region and is popular for the fair that is held every year, right after the festival of Dussehra. As per the beliefs of the locals here, Baba Bhai Sikh, who lived in Jhingran Village, used to meditate here and offered religious teaching to people living here.
Built in the year 1928, Gurudwara Singh Sabha of Nawanshehar was constructed by a committee of about 25 members, who gathered money to purchase the land required for the Gurudwara.
The Suraj Kund temple is located in Rahon and is one of the most important religious places in India. Located in Mandali, is a roza that is dedicated to one of the eight sons of Muslim saint Gospaal, that is Abdulla Shah Kadri, who also built the same when he was alive. The train station located here, is also named after Baba Abdulla Shah Kadri, as people believe that trains used to stop here mysteriously.
Baba Balraj Temple located in Balachur, belongs to the 16th century A.D. and is associated the king of Jaipur, who is believed to have meditated here. It was after the death of the king, that his son took over and built a temple dedicated to his father, in the year 1596 A.D. This is also popular as the spot where Sher Shah Suri came to seek the blessings of Baba Raj Dev, before his fight against Humayun. Another important place located near the region of Rahon, in the village of Dariapur, is Kirpal Sagar, which is an important religious place for people of different faiths like Hindus, Muslims, Sikhs and Christians.
Dedicated to Maharaja Raja Sahib, is the Gurudwara of Nabh Kanwal, which lies in proximity to the villages of Jhingram and Rehpa.
The foundation stone for this temple was laid on December 18th in the year 1869, by Pandit Nihal Chand Gautam, Pandit Mool Raj Gautam and Pandit Shri Kant Gautam. It took about six years for this temple to be completed. It was on 15th of December in the year 1865, that the temple was inaugurated by Pandit Vishwanath, the Deputy Commissioner of Jalandhar
It was from the region of Jaipur, that the idol of Mata Chintapoorni, was brought here. Later on a committee was formed by the name of Sanehi Sankirtan Mandal, to look after the condition of the temple and to carry on all the repair related works within the temple. Now, many religious ceremonies are held in the temple such as marriages of financially backward people.
