The town lies at an altitude of 2286 m and has been remarked as the ‘queen of hill stations’ by Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru.

The natural surroundings of Ooty include landscapes, dense forest reserves and national parks. This hill station is popular for its tea farming as well as oil extraction industry, wherein the oil is obtained from its eucalyptus trees, lemon grass, geranium, clove and camphor.

History of Ooty

Ooty covers an area of 36 sq km and contains the highest point of Southern India, the Doddabetta Peak. The name of the place was derived from the Toda word ‘othakal-mund’ that means ‘the house of single stone.’

It is believed that the part of Ooty was handed to Mr John Sullivan, the tenth Governor of Coimbatore by Todas to develop the city.  Before independence, British army was sent to Ooty to rest and recover after the war. There is no such historical data that talks about Ooty being ruled by some dynasty. The Old Ooty has some historical connections with the Toda tribes.

Ooty has also been named as the summer capital of the Madras Presidency and used to be a popular summer retreat of Britishers during the colonial days. The beauty and significance of the Nilgiri Hills was covered in a book written by Jacome Forico, who was the first European to visit the place, in 1603.

Specialty of this place is its tea plantation, home made chocolates and cheap and beautiful clothes and its food, Beautiful climate, beautiful view and beautiful people.

One must visit - dodabetta peak, 9 mile, majestic botanical garden, ooty lake, pyaar fall, pykara lake and all the other beautiful places. Dominos pizza are yummy and better than the dominos pizza what you get here in Mumbai.

My advice to all the travellers is carry less clothes and do shopping over there. Cheap and beautiful clothes spl leather are so cheap. You will get leather jackets at just rs 6000/- pure leather and u will love it Coz I loved it too. In Orchid square you will get delicious food. You must try their food. Its a proper travellers destination 5' degree at night and you will love it. Enjoy have a happy and safe journey.

The ootacamund is a good visiting place for tourists. The climatic condition of the place is always good. So many natural beauties are visible in the location. More constructional works are in progress for making it more beautiful. The rose garden, botanical garden etc are the soul of Ooty's beauty. The beauty of rose garden can not be explained on mere words. Go & enjoy.

Good place for summer. The traditional toy train of Ooty is not to be missed. Pykara falls is too good and not be missed. Nice cold weather and hence you should be prepared with some thick clothes. Dodabetta could be a nice photo shot opportunity.

"Awesome place to spend time and enjoy nature" new review

  • 7/7

You have to visit this place during winter, in the month of October or Nov or Dec. People who like cold climate, hill station will surely love this place.

There is a beautiful Botanical garden which shouldn't be missed. It's a beautiful garden with a variety of plants and flowers. It's a good place for a newly married couples. It's the best place to visit with your wife or girl friend. There is a good variety of food available. Especially delicious south Indian food.

I like boating. There is a pretty big beautiful lake where we can go for boating. I would advice travellers to visit this place by road especially private vehicle to enjoy each and every moment, even the journey part will be amazing as it is a hill station. And it is better to carry some warm clothes along, as it is very cold there.

Went to Ooty in January 2015. Temperatures were between 10 to 15 degrees, something very enjoyable. The toy train ride is a must try, went to Conoor with it. Also, went for a trek to Ketti Hill (locals organised it!). In Coonoor, really enjoyed the Lamb's Rock and Dolphin's Nose Point.

Ooty is a very beautiful place and I will like to visit it again, it is very good place and I stayed there in a guest room. The guest room was very far from other guest houses but the view from that guest house was very good and the rooms are very big but I don't remember the name unfortunately. So in the end I will tell you to visit this place.
