Ooty, the colloquial of Ootacamund, is a popular hill station of South India in the Nilgiri District of Tamil Nadu. Also known as Udhagamandalam, it is a municipality and the district capital. The town lies at an altitude of 2286 m and has been remarked as the ‘queen of hill stations’ by Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru.

The natural surroundings of Ooty include landscapes, dense forest reserves and national parks. This hill station is popular for its tea farming as well as oil extraction industry, wherein the oil is obtained from its eucalyptus trees, lemon grass, geranium, clove and camphor.

History of Ooty

Ooty covers an area of 36 sq km and contains the highest point of Southern India, the Doddabetta Peak. The name of the place was derived from the Toda word ‘othakal-mund’ that means ‘the house of single stone.’

It is believed that the part of Ooty was handed to Mr John Sullivan, the tenth Governor of Coimbatore by Todas to develop the city.  Before independence, British army was sent to Ooty to rest and recover after the war. There is no such historical data that talks about Ooty being ruled by some dynasty. The Old Ooty has some historical connections with the Toda tribes.

Ooty has also been named as the summer capital of the Madras Presidency and used to be a popular summer retreat of Britishers during the colonial days. The beauty and significance of the Nilgiri Hills was covered in a book written by Jacome Forico, who was the first European to visit the place, in 1603.

The destination also experiences a wide array of festivals and events all year long that depict its cultural identity and history. Most of the popular festivals of India including the Buddhist and Hindu ones are celebrated in Ooty.

The significant festivals include the Summer Flower Festival held at the Botanical Garden that remains the main highlight of the place, during the season. In addition, the Tea and Tourism festival held in January every year also attracts thousands of tourists.

"Perfect place for its spellbounding nature" new review

  • 5/7

I enjoyed my vacation in Ooty with my family members. The beauty of Ooty cannot be explained by words and we had pleasant stay at good hotel yet affordable. All the places were green which is so attractive to see. Rain drizzled and water droplets on grass and flowers were attractive. If you fail to book your rooms in advance, the local guides will/may take to some hotel/guest house who may charge exorbitantly.

Before you visit the place, only thing you have to ensure is the availability of accommodation, that is, you have to book your rooms and go.

If you fail to book your rooms in advance, the local guides will/may take to some hotel/guest house who may charge exorbitantly.

"Perfect for any season and value for money" new review

  • 7/7

I stayed at Ooty for 3 days during June of last year. I went from Mumbai - Bangalore - Mysore - Ooty.

The journey from Mysore to Ooty took about 6 hours by deluxe luxury bus and the landscape changed continuously from flat green fields to charming houses on tiny hills to the deep forests of Mudumalai and then the tea gardens and Eucalyptus trees towering above.

Though it was summer time, it started raining as soon as we arrived in Ooty and the weather turned so romantic, cool and cloudy.

I stayed at Klooneys Mysticville which is about 20 kms from the actual city centre but it was a great place to stay.

The staff was great and the food at the resort was awesome!! The breakfast spread is lavish and is included in the price for the room.

Room tip: Take the room facing the valley, the view in the morning is breathtaking.

We hired a car and saw most of the tourist places the next day.

On the last day we shopped for some home made chocolates, coffee and tea, jams and marmalades and of course the various Nilgiri oils.

Beautiful place to visit. Do not forget to bring home everlasting flowers from Ooty as a souvenir.

These yellow flowers look like they are made from plastic but they are real flowers and stay fresh for up to 1 year when kept in sunlight.

You will get them for 20 rupees a bunch outside the botanical gardens.

Ooty is a hill station, with good connectivity from Rail, Road & Air, nearly 1800 m above sea level. The good time to visit is from Feb to May and the season will be cool and pleasant. This is a good holiday destination for all kind of travellers with all kinds of hotels & resorts to suit all budgets.

There is lake with boat ride, flower shows, beautiful scenic hill slopes, the age old train journey all along the hilly terrain with lots of twists and turns and tunnels and specially the kids will love it.

Ooty is the district head quarters with major shopping bazaars, banks, ATM's and hotels with good food.

We stayed in Sterling Holiday Resorts at Fern Hill and the Resort is very good with beautiful suites, 1 bed & 2 bed cottages with great view.

"A great destination with attractive sightseeing spots" new review

Located in a nice location with a view over Race Course and has well developed and maintained garden with lovely flowers creating a pleasant ambience. Originally constructed by British, has undergone some modification and gives us a warm stay inside the resort. Food and beverages served in the room itself. Service is very good. Approach road (just more than a KM) from the main road is narrow and need careful driving to reach the resort. Thoroughly enjoyed the stay with my family.

Of Course visited Rose Garden (about 4000 variety of roses planted), Doddabetta (highest point), Botanical Garden (having good old trees), Pykara Falls (approach arrangement is very good including the battery car), Boating in Pykara Lake (with a just introduced family from Pune), Thread Garden (developed manually using thread & unique one), Shooting spots (pleasant weather) as well Balaji temple in Coonoor & Catherine waterfalls near Kotagiri. Visited one more Chinna Tirupathi temple near Mettupalayam, a well maintained temple, conducting all Pooja similar to Tirupati.
