The town lies at an altitude of 2286 m and has been remarked as the ‘queen of hill stations’ by Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru.

The natural surroundings of Ooty include landscapes, dense forest reserves and national parks. This hill station is popular for its tea farming as well as oil extraction industry, wherein the oil is obtained from its eucalyptus trees, lemon grass, geranium, clove and camphor.

History of Ooty

Ooty covers an area of 36 sq km and contains the highest point of Southern India, the Doddabetta Peak. The name of the place was derived from the Toda word ‘othakal-mund’ that means ‘the house of single stone.’

It is believed that the part of Ooty was handed to Mr John Sullivan, the tenth Governor of Coimbatore by Todas to develop the city.  Before independence, British army was sent to Ooty to rest and recover after the war. There is no such historical data that talks about Ooty being ruled by some dynasty. The Old Ooty has some historical connections with the Toda tribes.

Ooty has also been named as the summer capital of the Madras Presidency and used to be a popular summer retreat of Britishers during the colonial days. The beauty and significance of the Nilgiri Hills was covered in a book written by Jacome Forico, who was the first European to visit the place, in 1603.

"A memorable trip" new review

The trip was really a memorable one as I was with my family enjoying the chillness of this place and beautiful rides in my car. Just a break from work pressure is really required at times and some time to spend with family.

Since this is completely ghat section driving should be careful and the vehicle should be in a very good condition. Please do not carry any plastic as it is banned in most of the places. You can enjoy South-Indian spicy food. There is a train from mettupalayam and the train journey is fantastic.

"Trip down the memory lane" new review

  • 6/7
  • Posted 3 weeks ago
A visit to Ooty after 10 years was a pleasant experience. Ooty, the queen of Nilgiri has retained its old charm with lush green tea gardens, the well maintained botanical gardens. So far is is saved from vagaries of commercialization and destruction of lush green valley. A Lake with boating and visit to Kannur and travel by heritage train was a beautiful experience. A must visit destination who loves nature.

  • Posted 3 weeks ago
This is the perfect place to be refreshed from our daily busy chores of day to day life. This is the only place where poor touristers, budgetary touristers as well as rich touristers can afford the and enjoy this place in a full frame.

The perfect place for enjoying and have fun and there are many sightseeing in this famous foggy mountain named Ootacamund viz. Ooty. There are many sightseeing in this places viz, the Doddabetta peak which is enjoyable for trekking, Ooty lake which is very enjoyable for boating, famous Botanical garden where we can see many type of botany which is more enjoy to view as well as for the education projects for the students and the famous Rose garden where we can see many types of Roses which are not seen in the world and famous markets where we can buy many types of things.

Travelling to this place can afford any of the people. The Lakeview Hotel is the only place where the touristers can lodge there and have fun as well. This is the only place where we can be Refreshed as our title represents. The best month to travel in this place is November to January to have fun. The mini Train which runs on the mountain of Ooty gives you to view all the sceneries of Ooty.

Have fun in this place ever if you visit it.
