Ooty, the colloquial of Ootacamund, is a popular hill station of South India in the Nilgiri District of Tamil Nadu. Also known as Udhagamandalam, it is a municipality and the district capital. The town lies at an altitude of 2286 m and has been remarked as the ‘queen of hill stations’ by Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru.

The natural surroundings of Ooty include landscapes, dense forest reserves and national parks. This hill station is popular for its tea farming as well as oil extraction industry, wherein the oil is obtained from its eucalyptus trees, lemon grass, geranium, clove and camphor.

History of Ooty

Ooty covers an area of 36 sq km and contains the highest point of Southern India, the Doddabetta Peak. The name of the place was derived from the Toda word ‘othakal-mund’ that means ‘the house of single stone.’

It is believed that the part of Ooty was handed to Mr John Sullivan, the tenth Governor of Coimbatore by Todas to develop the city.  Before independence, British army was sent to Ooty to rest and recover after the war. There is no such historical data that talks about Ooty being ruled by some dynasty. The Old Ooty has some historical connections with the Toda tribes.

Ooty has also been named as the summer capital of the Madras Presidency and used to be a popular summer retreat of Britishers during the colonial days. The beauty and significance of the Nilgiri Hills was covered in a book written by Jacome Forico, who was the first European to visit the place, in 1603.

People & Culture in Ooty

The destination also experiences a wide array of festivals and events all year long that depict its cultural identity and history. Most of the popular festivals of India including the Buddhist and Hindu ones are celebrated in Ooty.

The significant festivals include the Summer Flower Festival held at the Botanical Garden that remains the main highlight of the place, during the season. In addition, the Tea and Tourism festival held in January every year also attracts thousands of tourists.

We went to ooty on Aug 6th 2015 and stayed for 4 days. It was a very memorable stay. The lush green gardens & huge lakes were very attractive. Moreover the weather at that time never made us tiring. Do not miss the Botanical Gardens, 9th Mile, Toy Train.

"A good place to visit" new review

Ooty as a destination was a good place. The season time is between March to June. If you think of traveling to Ooty on other seasons then it would be mostly raining all the time. If you are just going out for relaxation then other seasons are fine. But if you are going out to see places then best time is between March to June.

"A good hill station" new review

  • 5/7

We always like hill station. The total family like Ooty. We enjoyed the journey stay and sightseeing. Good food commercial purchase place and when ever we go we purchase painkiller oils and Ooty biscuits etc. We have visited Ooty several times. Each and every place will consume more than 2 to 3 hours. Hence minimum 3 days required to see all the places. New travellers need 4 days to see all the places.

"Good Place to visit but not in Rainy Season" new review

  • 5/7
  • Posted 2 weeks ago
Our trip to Ooty was spoilt due to rainy season, it is nice place to visit and many things to enjoy especially 'Toy Train' and 'Dinosaurs Park'. It has very nice scenic beauty and can really be enjoyed in summer season. The way to Bandipur wildlife sanctuary is also very interesting but have to be careful with Monkeys.

"A nice hill station" new review

  • 6/7
  • Posted 3 weeks ago
Ooty is the famous hill station of South-India. The climate here is a sub tropical breezing type. Unlike other southern towns, Ooty has a nice climatic conditions. It has lots of sightseeing places. Big Mountains, Great Lakes, green forests, beautiful grasslands and tea estates. The climate remains same almost every month. It's preferable if you visit in june/july month but other month also you can visit. The ones who are fond of Travelling, Honeymoon couples, Family and young aged people, for all of them it's a paradise.

Rose garden, Ooty lake, botanical garden, Ooty mountain railway, stone house and toda huts are the best sightseeing. Nilgiri Tea peculiar to this place is the most beverage you should taste when you visit this place. There are lots of Hotels and restaurants available for both veg and non-veg people. I was busy in photographing big hills, rivers, gardens etc. It is also a nice place for trekking. Boating in Ooty lake is also a good activity when you visit there. Its better if you visit by road and catch a bus service so that you can reach early morning just before sunrise and have a sunrise view over there.

"Excellent destination for summer" new review

  • 6/7
  • Posted 3 weeks ago
Nature ac is kept throughout the hills. Ooty city center is little bit untidy but the places to visits are mindblowing. I never had this feel before at any hill station. Ooty rose garden is superb. Tea museum was ok. Dolphin nose. Kotagiri tea estate was superb. Average was the boat club. I missed the mountain train as it had heavy crowd. All must visit Ooty in summer.

Ooty is a best place to spend the vacation. It is best place in India to enjoy the climate. South india's highest peak is located here only that is doddabetta. There are many resorts here so we can spend our vacation in a very good manner. It is the best place to visit with the family in South-India.

"Perfect long weekend destination to de-stress yourself" new review

  • 7/7
  • Posted 3 weeks ago
Ooty is the perfect hill station destination especially in southern part of India. Weather is calm, even in summer. Nice places to see around like Botanical Garden, Ooty Lake, Doddabetta Peak and Tea Factory. Kannur is also pretty nearby from Ooty. So one should also plan to visit there. Tea, coffee, chocolates are the items to buy from here.
