The town lies at an altitude of 2286 m and has been remarked as the ‘queen of hill stations’ by Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru.

The natural surroundings of Ooty include landscapes, dense forest reserves and national parks. This hill station is popular for its tea farming as well as oil extraction industry, wherein the oil is obtained from its eucalyptus trees, lemon grass, geranium, clove and camphor.

History of Ooty

Ooty covers an area of 36 sq km and contains the highest point of Southern India, the Doddabetta Peak. The name of the place was derived from the Toda word ‘othakal-mund’ that means ‘the house of single stone.’

It is believed that the part of Ooty was handed to Mr John Sullivan, the tenth Governor of Coimbatore by Todas to develop the city.  Before independence, British army was sent to Ooty to rest and recover after the war. There is no such historical data that talks about Ooty being ruled by some dynasty. The Old Ooty has some historical connections with the Toda tribes.

Ooty has also been named as the summer capital of the Madras Presidency and used to be a popular summer retreat of Britishers during the colonial days. The beauty and significance of the Nilgiri Hills was covered in a book written by Jacome Forico, who was the first European to visit the place, in 1603.

The place hosts the famous Ooty lake, the boating in it is worth time. There are also other attractions like the botanical garden, the well-known home made chocolates of Ooty which are of mouthwatering taste. The place also has the Tibetan market where the tourists can shop for variety of items without emptying their pockets. There are also other activities like Horse riding, cycling which will allow us to enjoy the mesmerising beauty of the place. The best season for visiting this place is during the months of April - June.

Ooty as a destination is the best getaway from Bangalore to reach the cooler climes. The fog, the mist, the hills are soothing. There a lot of places to visit and pass time with friends. It is good for hikers, bikers, trekkers, and masti lovers who want to spend some time in Nilgiris.

"Awesome day at Ooty!" new review

  • 4.5/7
  • Posted 7 days ago
It's a off day for 3 consecutive days. And my dad decided to get a refreshing journey for our family. We look for the best convenient place for us, and finally get the Ooty. We departed at early morning and reach there on around 9 am. And we get in to flower show that has been on going on that month. It's a beautiful and romantic experience to walk through buildings and monuments made with flowers. Botanical garden is wast. I get tired to walk for so long as I am carrying my sister. We then go to boat riding. And returned at around 7 pm back to home.

"Ooty! its a heaven in my eyes" new review

  • 6.0/7
  • Posted 7 days ago
It's really a heaven. Just you have to weak up early and start early in the morning before sun rises. Can't express in words. You have to experience it. The fresh air you won't get any where else the dew spread all over evenly. Slowly sun rises, the first ray of sun. Its amazing!

Whole day you will experience the pleasant atmosphere. Evening starts early in Ooty. By 4pm a slight cold air starts. It's very nice to have a cup of coffee. Night is too much romantic in Ooty. You have to. My experience from last 8 years. Every year I'm visiting Ooty. Every year, every morning, every evening. Ooty is not same, every time it's different.
