Orchha Reviews

"Heritage at its best" new review

Orchha Experience: if you are a heritage lover, you will love this place. Though the place has nothing much to offer, but remains of chattris (cenotaphs), fort, temple are worth watching. Do spend good amount of time in fort and if you have sufficient time i would suggest heritage walk of orchha both 1 and 2. This walk takes you around all these heritage places in this city. worth visiting. Betwa river is nothing much or special.
Food, sight-seeing and shopping: lack of eating out option. its advisable to eat at your restaurant, or visit Jhansi around 20Km from orchcha for better eating options. Same for shopping too.
Activities & things to do: visit fort, chattris(cenotaphs)
Travel tips, How to reach, travel warnings etc: if coming from gwalior do checkout on road before Datia and between datia and jhansi, as we travelled during march 2013 and this was no road at all. It was very very difficult with medium sized hatchback car to commute, as you have to always decide should you put your front wheels or back wheels of car into which pot hole on road. it was actually no road at all. if road is very bad, try to go via shivpuri which will be 100km extra, but road is excellent you will endup saving time at the end and also prevent your car from breakdown.

"Review of Orchha" new review

Orchha Experience: The place is teeming with foreign tourists and Indian pilgrims; both seem to have come for entirely opposite purposes. Both view each other with interest and interact frequently. There is not much to see except the crowds of pilgrims and the usual paraphernelia of a pilgrim town. The riverside looses its charm because of the crowds and the general lack of cleanliness.
Food, sight-seeing and shopping: Various options available, including international cuisine. The palaces are impressive, but poorly maintained. Steep stairs and narrow overhanging balconies can be dangerous and definitely need a will to climb. The chatris are well laid out but very poorly maintained. It is a pity that such grand buildings are been allowed to decay.
Activities & things to do: Just roam around the place and look at the crowds of pilgrims.
Travel tips, How to reach, travel warnings etc: Best option is possibly from Jhansi, but the city is chaotic. Avoid traveling from Gwalior, because the road is in a terrible shape.

"Nostalgic Orchha"

Orchha Experience: Orchha is not a much heard place. But we were astonished after reaching Orchha. It looks like a sleeping town with memories of Bundelkhand era spread all over the city. It resemble Angkor Vat in Cambodia. The combination of Betwa river, forest and historical places is unique.
Food, sight-seeing and shopping: Nothing special as such regarding food and shopping in Orchha. But there are lots of historical places to see. Jahangir palace, Raja Mahal, Rani Mahal, Laxmi Temple, Ram Raja Temple, Chhatris, Rai Praveen Mahal etc. Don't miss sun set from other side of Betwa river. The light and sound programme in Orchha fort is one of the best I've seen in India. It surpasses the same in Khajuraho. The sound system is very good.
Activities & things to do: Trekking, rafting in Betwa river.
Travel tips, How to reach, travel warnings etc: Orchha is only 8 Kms. from Jhansi.

"Orchha - a hidden destination"

Orchha Experience: When we started discussing about spending a weekend in Orchha, lots of eyebrows were raised as the place is not well-known. Indeed, Orchha means ‘a hidden place’. This ‘hidden’ place, however, offers some commendable sightseeing. The first thing that you become familiar with quickly is the lush greenery of this small town. The best time to visit this place is during the monsoon. The majestic and ancient buildings stand on own glory against the background of dark cumulus clouds. The overflown Betwa River and the lush greenery add to the beauty.
Food, sight-seeing and shopping: Since the area of this town is small, the sightseeing destinations are a walking distance away. The unique attractions are the cenotaphs of the Bundela kings, which stands at the banks of Betwa river. The series of cenotaphs make a picturesque view from the bridge, which connects between Orchaa town with the forest. The Orchha fort is also another attraction, which is an example of Mughal architecture, with precise geometric proportions. The view from Jahangir Mahal is breathtaking. Being a small town of about 12000, the town does not have any unique shopping attractions – except form regular handicrafts – which is common in any of the destinations in India, with foreign tourists. Similarly, the option for food is limited as the numbers of restaurants are limited. However, the food quality in luxury hotels, like Amar Mahal and Seesh Mahal is excellent.
Activities & things to do: We visited the place during monsoon. There was heavy rains and we realized that relaxing is activity – which we generally miss during the hectic city life. Orchha is a great destination, where you can have nice relaxing time – as you do not have many things for sightseeing. Seating beside the river banks watching the river flowing – an activity, which you might remember for quite some time. Rarely do we give such time to ourselves. You can return home with rejuvenation.
Travel tips, How to reach, travel warnings etc: Orchha is considered as added bonus during Khajuraho trip – however, it deserves more attention. Monsoon is one of the best times for visit, followed by winter. Summer is definitely avoidable. This takes only 30 minutes from Jhansi railway station. Bhopal Shatabdi is the best option – where you can reach Orchha by 11:30 AM in the morning. During monsoon, sometimes the Betwa River gets overflowing and start flowing above the bridge. Hence, one should avoid crossing the bridge and going to the forest – even when the bridge is accessible.
