Prabhas-Giri, or Prabhosa, is a small town situated in Manjhanpur tehsil of Kaushambi District, in the state of Uttar Pradesh. Located on the north bank of River Yamuna, this town is a popular pilgrim place for Jains. It is situated around 50 km north of Allahabad and is located close to Kaushambi, another important site of Jains.
In ancient times, Prabhas-Giri was a part of the city of Kaushambi and covered by dense forests. It has been mentioned in 2 BC records predating the Gupta Dynasty. These records are written in Brahmi script and were found in a cave in this town.
Prabhas-Giri is an important destination for Hindus, since Lord Krishna spent his last years here. Along with that, it is frequented by Jain Pilgrims as the 6th Tirthankar of the Jains, Bhagwan Padma Prabhu, underwent the four kalyanka here, namely garbh, janam, tap and gyan. Presently, an almond colored statue of Bhagwan Padma Prabhu in lotus posture is placed at the Padma Prabhu Temple.
It is said that centuries ago, the chief pundit of Kaushambi had a dream about an icon of Bhagwan Padma Prabhu lying in a nearby well. In the dream, it was indicated that he should extract the icon and place it properly in the temple. The icon was found at the site that the pundit had dreamt of; it adorns the temple even now.
Other major attractions of this place include the Jain temples of Prabhosa and Sheetla Temple of Kara Dham. Travellers can also visit other places of theological importance located nearby, like Kara and Manjhanpur.
The main airport, railway station and bus stand of Allahabad connect Prabhas-Giri. The Bamrauli Airport of Allahabad is located 40 km from this town and connects it with major cities like Delhi, Mumbai and Chennai. Buses run by the Uttar Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation as well as private contractors serve tourists coming to this town from Allahabad.
The nearest railway station, called Bharvari Railway Station, is situated in Kaushambi District, though Allahabad station connects it to cities like Mumbai, Pune, Varanasi, Jhansi, Gwalior and Nagpur.
Prabhas-Giri experiences hot summers in April, May and June and cold winters during November, December, January and February. The town receives moderate to heavy rainfall during the months of July, August and September. Holi is the best time to visit this town, though it is frequented by tourists all year long.
