Raichak Info

  • State: West Bengal
  • Famous for/as: Heritage
  • District: South 24 Parganas
Raichak is a small town situated in the South 24 Parganas District of West Bengal. Famous for its Fort which stands as a testimony to the bygone era, the quiet town of Raichak provides picturesque views of the River Ganges. Raichak is situated on the outskirts of Kolkata, on the banks of the River Hooghly, a 260 km long distributary channel of River Ganges.

Raichak lies close to Diamond Harbour and acts as a link between Haldia and Kolkata. Raichak is at a distance of 15 km from Diamond Harbour and 50 km from Kolkata, the capital city of West Bengal. The Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport is about 70 km away from Raichak.

Raichak was originally founded by the British East India Company during the era of colonisation. They built a Fort in the Anglo Indian style, which was called as Raichak Fort, on the river bend in the year 1783, to guard against pirates taking the river route to Kolkata. General Watson, the British Commander, resided here along with his wife Mary, daughter Caroline and 65 soldiers.

Post-Independence the Fort turned into ruins. In the late 90s, the Carlton Group of Hotels in collaboration with the Bengal Ambuja Group converted the Fort in to a resort called Radisson Fort. Today, this Fort is a popular destination of corporate people. There are a few historical items that are on display at Raichak Fort which are a grand piano, swords and several perfume bottles.

Raichak has become a popular weekend destination from Kolkata owing to the beauty of the river and the 18th century Raichak Fort or Radisson Fort. Apart from the riverside views, Raichak offers much more to watch and do. A walk by the river, sunbathing, surfing and waterskiing are some activities.

Boat rides or ferry rides to Kukhrahati or Gadiara or to other nearby towns and villages from Raichak Jetty and Nurpur Jetty is another popular activity at Raichak. Some tourists sail through River Hooghly and the suburbs of Bay of Bengal. A trip to the nearby tourist spots like Diamond Harbour or Haldia can also be availed. The best time to visit Raichak is from October to March when the weather becomes cooler.

Raichak is one of the weekend getaway options for travelers living in Alipore and Kolkata.

About 50 kms away from Kolkata, situated on the bank of River Hooghly, Raichak is a small town, the natural beauty is contributed by the vastness of the river. Being close to Kolkata, stayed at Ffort raichak ... Enjoy the place & natural beauty .. Returned home next day .. Fully relaxed whole day .. River side was awesome ... Specially near Ganga Kutir .. Enjoyed indoor games & spa at Anaya kutir.

If you want to relax for a day with your partner then this is the right place for you. Ganga Kutir is a perfect place for your mind refreshment. I have expected that I will get all the facilities of Ganga Kutir, but I got surprised when I reached there. I got all the facilities of all the other places like effort, ananya, sonar tori. The disc in ffort is also a visitable place. You can easily enjoyed the sunset and sunrise part from your room with your partner combining a wine glass. This is my best experience in my sort trip plan.

"Had an excellent sunset view at Raichak"

About 55 kms away from Kolkata. Situated on the bank of River Hooghly, Raichak is a small town, the natural beauty is contributed by the vastness of the river. Being close to Kolkata, a day outing is adequate, but if you want, there is a good hotel to take care of 1/2 nights stay. Boating in the river must be done, preferably during dusk. Raichak also acts as a link to Haldia, which is 25 kms away from Kukrahati situated on the other side of the river. Regular ferry and bus service are available.

"Moonstruck at raichak"

Its quite near to the city, yet far from the humdrum's. greenery twines the river shore. experiencing sunshine by the river is worth visiting the place. and a full moon adds to the platter.

Food, sight-seeing and shopping: The hotel serves exquisite cuisine. quality and presentation of the food is superb.
went for long hours of strolling amidst greenery lining the river banks. boating on the river amidst twilight is a lifetime experience.

Activities & things to do: Just cut yourself from the busy world and plunge into blissful oblivion

Travel tips, How to reach, travel warnings etc: Its merely an hour and a half from the city. buses ply regularly from esplanade on a regular basis
Beware of mosquitoes if you choose to take a stroll along the river bank after sunset

I did not find destination as road is quite narrow & traffic moves very slow. Destination does not have any activity to do & one gets confined to hotel only.

Food, sight-seeing and shopping: Food is quite OK. No shopping or sight seeing is available.

Activities & things to do: Hotel has limited activities for guests.

Travel tips, How to reach, travel warnings etc: Poor road conditions & village roads with animals laundering.

"A Town By The River"

  • 6.0/7
  • Posted Feb 10, 2009
Raichak is a sleepy town on the banks of the majestic river Ganges. Its a definite Weekend getaway for people staying in and around Kolkata. The best thing about the place is the calm. It makes you forget the daily hustle bustle. Its best to drive down to the place. Stay there for one or two days and enjoy the view of the river and the pure air. Also, a lot depends on your choice of lodging so book a place accordingly.

Food, sight-seeing and shopping: Food available at the resort that we stayed in was good. This place is not meant for shopping so dont expect to shop there except for green vegetables or fish that you might or might not want to carry back to Kolkata

Activities & things to do: One can take a boat ride on the river. Thats the only thing thats fun. The weather is pretty pleasant there. In November it was pretty cold in the evening.

Travel tips, How to reach, travel warnings etc: The distance from Kolkata isn't much and also the Diamond Harbor Road offers you resting and eating options all along the way. Dont forget to carry mosquito repellent gels/ creams/ lotions coz the mosquitos wont let you stay outdoors if you dont. I couldn't see a good market there so carry your booze along.
