| Ken Preston | 12th January 2007 | | | Candolim Capers | Overview of the destinationI love Candolim. The beaches are superb, the restaurants wonderful and the people so welcoming. The resort is growing in popularity and that is reflected in the amount of development going on - new hotels and apartments. Food, sight-seeing and shopping Besides the beach you can do some serious shopping. Super Tailors will make you a suit or a dress in a couple of days and boutiques like Glimpses of India have up market leather goods, clothes and housewares at good prices
There are dozens of jewellers that, if they haven't got what you want, will make it for you.
You should take a taxi to the Wednesday market at Anjuna to do some serious haggling and bring back bargains of every description.
After 7 is a wonderful restaurant in the garden of the owner's mansion. His camembert souffle is to die for! The Mermaid is run by a Goan/Swedish couple and their food is a delicious mix of the Goan and traditional. Activities & things to do From Candolim a trip into Panjim, Goa's capital is definitely worth while. Take a trip on the sunset cruise aboard the 'Paradise' and enjoy the on board entertainment and afterwards go for a superb meal at the Delhi Darbar - an unbeatable night out!
A boat trip along the coast to quiet beaches and getting close to dolphins is a glorious way to spend a day.
There are trips to spice plantations, temples, churches and waterfalls which, depending on where your interest lies, are all interesting and informative as well as just good fun. Travel tips, How to reach, travel warnings etc. Driving standards are very different from those in Europe and will be frightening at first but there is some method in all the chaos and you soon get used to it. Taxis are inexpensive and everywhere. I would strongly advise against hiring cars, scooters or bikes - it's just too dangerous.
Goans are open, friendly people and it's impossible to leave without having made some special friends and lasting memories. | |
