History Re-visited
Overview of the destination
Visit Srirangapatna, erstwhile capital of Tipu Sultan, for a slice of history You feel you are traveling back in time as you are greeted at the city?s entrance by the old fort gate, a testimony of Tipu?s mighty empire, even though it is plastered with film posters now. The journey down the ages begins with the Jumma Masjid. The tall minarets supposedly hold 250 stairs each. The terrace of the mosque has a sundial and offers a nice view of the trees that shade the mosque and the fort.

Food, sight-seeing and shopping
Further down is Tipu?s death spot, which is marked by a plaque, even as a grove of coconut trees stand guard. Interestingly, the British assault was led by Arthur Wellesley ? the man who later defeated Napoleon in the famous Battle of Waterloo. To the right is the Wellesley Bridge, crossing which takes you to the banks of the Paschima Vaahini segment of the river Cauvery. The remains of Tipu?s Fort frame the horizon to the left. To the left is the famous Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple, which has Lord Vishnu in the sleeping posture on the Great Snake Anantha.

Activities & things to do
Towards the eastern side of the island lies Daria Daulat Bagh, Tipu?s summer place. Built in teak wood, its walls are adorned with some beautifully painted frescoes depicting various wars fought by Hyder Ali and Tipu. Also on display are drawings of the erstwhile Mysore State, as well as furniture and clothing from that period. The lawns of the palace are excellently preserved and offer an ideal spot for lunching travelers. Further down is the Gumbaz, which houses the mortal remains of Tipu, his father and his mother. It has splendid doors inlaid with ivory and Tipu's favorite tiger stripes cover the walls.

Travel tips, How to reach, travel warnings etc.
A little further down the Gumbaz takes you to the banks of the main Cauvery. Dip your feet into the water, or take a Coracle boat ride across the river. A listing of the key attractions along with a route map is prominently displayed at all the sites. This is primarily a place for leisurely site seeing - people wanting a lot of action should stay away! Srirangapatna is located about 15 kilometers north east of Mysore
