Overview of the destinationKashid Beach is one of the many secluded seaside resorts that dot the western coast of India. It is a quaint little Maharashtrian village perched on a thickly wooded hill overlooking Kashid Bay and the Arabian Sea. It is popular mainly because of its white sand, blue seas, green mountains, paddy fields, and rivulets. Kashid has a 3 km stretch of beach tucked in between two rocky hillocks with casuarina groves all around the seashore. This is by far the best beach in this part of the Konkan region and though absolutely deserted on weekdays, the town can attract its fair share of week-end holiday makers. There are a few small hotels in Kashid as the rest of the area is privately owned.
Most of the hotels have packages with full board and lodging. We stayed at Sarve Cottage, a lovely little cottage with a swimming pool and a camping site with a machan too! They had five non-ac double rooms and a tent with an in-house family who catered to our needs. The package included all meals and cost us Rs 1000/ per day. The food they served us was delicious homely non vegetarian fare.
Food, sight-seeing and shopping
There are no options for eating out except the hawkers on the beach. The market is worth a visit as the fresh fish is a dream come true for all fish lovers. We picked up 6 kgs of fresh prawns for a meager 600 rupees and had them for snacks right through our stay.
Murud-Janjira is situated near Kashid. Murud is an old fisherman town with a good beach. Janjira is a famous fort in the middle of the sea near Murud. The tourists can also visit the Nawab's palace, Ganapati Pule temple and the beautiful Birla temple nearby. About ten km from Kashid beach is the Phansad bird sanctuary.
You can bike or walk the distance from the place you have put up to the beach. The vendors provide hammocks for relaxation, which they allow you to use only if you purchase something from them (very justified). This is good fun in the evening when everyone walks down to the beach.
There is nothing worth buying unless you want to take back fish!
Activities & things to do
Just relax on the beach and eat scrumptious fish. The hotel organises a good ayurvedic massage but only for gents.
Besides a must see is the Janjira fort and a peek at the Majestic Palace.
Basically just the soothing sea breeze with nothing else to do rejuvenates you.
