Overview of the destinationIt is a fail-safe wildlife destination that I would rank among the top five in India. You cant go wrong here and within two days you should have your fill of rhinos, elephants and wild buffaloes. If you are lucky you may even see a tiger, of which there is an abundance, but they all stay hidden in the tall grass, waiting for you to pass by. This is a paradise for birders with rarities like the greater adjutant stork, Bengal florican, grey headed lapwing, blossom headed parakeet and nesting grey headed fishing eagles among many others. The nearby Panbari reserve forest has capped langurs and Hoolock gibbon, which are a delight.
Food, sight-seeing and shopping
Given the importance of the destination, there are surprisingly, very few good places to stay. Local food is great, but those looking for familiar southern and northern flavours are likely to be disappointed. There is no shopping worth the name except perhaps Assam tea and some terrible T-shirts
Activities & things to do
The wildlife experience, if given by the right guide, is quite international and unbeatable. There is nothing much to do here apart from that. Those looking for any urban pleasures will be utterly disappointed. Oh yes, you can visit tea gardens and factories and understand the tea making process, but by prior appointment.
Travel tips, How to reach, travel warnings etc.
It is easier to travel via Jorhat, which is an hour's drive, compared to five hours from Guwahati. However, Jorhat does not have daily flights and connects only from Kolkata or Guwahati
