History, religion and politics come together at Amritsar
Overview of the destination
Essentially three are three places of interest in and around Amritsar - The Golden Temple, Jallianwalla Baug and the Wagah Border. Although there is little else to see or do, all three places warrant travelling to Amritsar.

Food, sight-seeing and shopping
Shopping is limited to Sikh artifacts and religious ornaments, mostly sold around the Golden Temple. The Golden Temple is an absolutely must-see. The architecture and design of the temple and the entire enclosure, the calm of the water body that surrounds it, the shining gold plating of the temple, the live and soothing bhajans sung by devotees within the temple, the piety of people Sikhs paying homage, everything adds up to a memorable experience.

Activities & things to do
Sightseeing only. Jallianwalla Baug is an eerie reminder of the brutality of our freedom struggle. A short walk from the Golden Temple, it is imperative one visit this landmark. A 40 km drive to the Wagah border check post is worth a visit only if you go there in the evening for the flag exchange between the 2 armies. Large crowds charged on nationalistic fervour, nationalistic songs blaring on the microphone, soldiers in full military uniform and armed to the teeth make this a must-visit as well.

Travel tips, How to reach, travel warnings etc.
Regular trains from Delhi and Chandigarh. Good roads connecting with Pathankhot, Chandigarh and Delhi. Avoid summer. It will be very hot. Make a hotel booking in advance...during important festival days, it might be tough to find a booking in a city filled with thousands of devotees.

 Amritsar Tourism
I intend to go to Amritsar as a holiday trip for 2-3 days during middle of December 2008. Kindly inform the contact address and telephone number of tourism office in Delhi to get tour package for Amritsar. The Tourist office number listed on internet is not available. I presume that like other States tour package there may be tour package for amritsar also which include transportation from Delhi, hotel stay and sight-seeing etc. The tour may include train journey, if permissible from Delhi to Amritsar by Shatabdi train or AC Chair car in any other train. Kindly confirm so that I can make my plan shortly. It is also requested to send literature of sightseeing places in Amritsar by post. Vijay Kumar Jaiswal, Project Officer (Legacy-Govt.),
