| Abbey Bangalore | 29th April 2006 | | Sunken treasures at Mahabalipuram | Overview of the destination A port city of the Pallava dynasty, the monuments of Mahabalipuram provide a fascinating glimpse into ancient south Indian history. Southern India was a maritime power with a sphere of influence across south east asia and mahabalipuram reflects this grandeur. Almost thirty years ago, as a child I first visited Mahabalipuram and I can still clearly see seawaves breaking over a beautiful stone-sculpted temple. The good news is that the temple has been protected from further sea erosion by building a protective wall. The sad part is that the mystical beauty of waves lashing an ancient temple is lost.Food, sight-seeing and shopping Take a 3 to 4 hour walk around all the ancient temples of Mahabalipuram. Get yourself one of the local guides; some of them can can give you useful information & perspective. Activities & things to do No activities. If you are staying in one of the two fancy resorts here, you might be able to get a catamaran ride into the Bay of Bengal. Travel tips, How to reach, travel warnings etc. Mahabalipuram is less than 2 hours by road from Chennai. The East Coast road from Chennai is pretty good, although less impressive than some of the gushing articles I have read about it. | |
