Weekend Trip from Chennai to Yelagiri
Overview of the destination
Yelagiri is an ideal place for a weekend getaway from Chennai. It's around 4 hours drive from Chennai in car. The road is fantastic to drive from Chennai. We can go in the Bangalore highway till Vaniyambadi. If you get on the highway next to Poonamalli, you get 3 toll gates. Take a left (clear signage showing directions in the highway) after Vaniyambadi and drive towards the hill. With 14 hair pin bends and nice road, it's drivers' paradise. Please do not set expectations with any other Hill station you had already visited. It's a unique small place, just as a nice weekend get away from Chennai.

Food, sight-seeing and shopping
I had food in the resort I stayed and it was very homely. You have few nice options to have food. When you are out of your resort on site seeing, just explore yourself and you can find good places to have food. You have the small lake which has boating. You just have 2 options - Row boat / Pedal boat ride. So at the max you can spend 1 hour in this place. Since the area of this place is small, you can comfortably reach this lake within 10 mins from any resort. Opposite to the lake, you have the Nature park. I was stumped to see such a nice man made park at this place. The lawns, children play area, plants and trees, artificial water fountain were just too good. You can enjoy this place if you go out with your kids. There is a musical fountain in this park. They play this around 7 PM. If it rains, they don't play this. You have a nice little Murugan Temple (you can also walk from the lake to this place). It's a typical small village temple in a pretty small hill. The major activity you can have is the Treks. You can get assistance from the hotel you stay. There is also a Govt. Tourist department office, where you can get pamphlets about the places to visit. You can shop pure Honey here and of course Jack fruits! If you are interested, you can buy plants in the nursery. But just check out what will happen to the pots when you wind down the hill. You don't get anything different from what you get in Chennai ECR nurseries. Just in case you want to remember Yelagiri whenever you see the little plant in your house, then buy a plant!

Activities & things to do
1)Boating - Not more than 1 hour, unless otherwise you are so addicted to boating! 2)Visit to Temple (quite a few, you can get the details from the hotel guy or the tourism department) 3)Nature park 4)Trek, Trek and Trek!

Travel tips, How to reach, travel warnings etc.
Chennai - Bangalore Highway via Sriperumbathur, Vellore, Ambur, Vaniyambadi. The last petrol pump is on the right hand side of the road when you approach the hill (on the road you take from Vaniyambadi to Yelagiri). But try to fill on the highways itself. There is no petrol on the hills. Mobile signal is very good for Vodafone customers. Check if you hotel accepts card, they normally don't. So take sufficient cash and leave. Since the road up the hill is narrow and is not a one-way, be careful as you can see Government buses and even lorries coming in the opposite direction. Though these guys leave way on the hairpin bends for the cars behind them, watch out for the clear signal from the bus/lorry driver, before you pass them. If you as the driver wants to enjoy the scenic beauty of the plains, you have few places to park the car and see. Please do not see the plains while you drive. And if you park your car on the slope when you climb up the hill, put hand brake and first gear. When you park the car in the slope while climbing down, use hand brake and reverse gear.
