Food, sight-seeing and shopping
There is hardly any sight seeing oppurtunity and shopping is shops are non-existent.There is nothing up there except for CTC resort and the government owned GMVN resort

Activities & things to do
Auli is the best place to go Skiing, it is rated among the top three ski destination. Apart from that there is Gorson forest reserve which is passable. The resort had wonderfully arranged for camp fire which is the only thing you can do after 5 as it gets really dark by then in the winters.

Travel tips, How to reach, travel warnings etc.
We had hired a tempo traveller from Delhi.We had taken a break at Rishikesh which is around 250 kms and 8-9 hrs dont miss river rafting there. Rsihikesh-Joshimath is another 200 kms and 8-9 hrs, start early at to reach Joshimath before 3 when the last cable car goes to Auli. If you misss that be prepared to spend a night in Joshimath which will not be great idea. The distance in the mountains are very deceptive and on an average you can do only 20-25 kms/hour. Dont go to Auli before February unless you want to ski in the slush.Be prepared for extremely cold temperatures and thin oxygen. Thermals are a must.
