A microcosm of British India - Calcutta
Overview of the destination
How Calcutta became Kolkata

Food, sight-seeing and shopping
Food is plentiful in Kolkata. It is city of healthy, very tasteful street food. In fact, the city lacks classy restaurants and you would be at a loss if you were looking for a place to spend a lot and have a fine dining experience. For that, you have the luxury hotels with their in-house restaurants. However, the average Calcuttan or the average tourist will always be found to eat from the roadside food stalls. Street food in Calcutta is prepared with a lot of care and love. Food stalls are usually owned by chefs and not by businessmen. The result is more than you can chew. Victoria Memorial is a sad monument to the time of British rule and New market is a dingy and congested place to shop. If you want shopping, forget Calcutta and go to Delhi or Bangalore.

Activities & things to do
Just soak in the city which has lots of atmosphere. You are supposed to relax and take it easy in this city and not do things. Wear your most comfortable sneakers and linen shirt and take a walk outside your hotel. Chances are that you will find it difficult to walk on the main throughfare but if you duck inside an alley you may be more comfortable with reasonable elbow room. Take a taxi or a tram to the far corners of the city and take another walk there and notice how food rules the city. Another thing that you notice is everybody and his grandmother reading a newspaper and commenting on the politics of the country and the world.

Travel tips, How to reach, travel warnings etc.
Fly down to Kolkata Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Airport and take a taxi to your hotel. Eat something and drink something with lemon in it before you do anything. This city is cool but very humid. Pack mosquito repellant and indigestion tablets. The water is bad. Avoid tap water and stick to bottled water with the Bisleri brand.
