Chilika Experience: We went to Chilika Lake from Puri by a taxi to see the dolphins and other wild life in and around this big sea water lagoon. The water in this lake is quite shallow, around 4 ft. or so and we travel on the lake by a long kayak type boat which is motorised. The dolphins live at the deeper end of the lake near the opening of the lake to the Bay of Bengal. We did see a few dolphins and also quite a variety of wild birds, cranes, seagulls, kites, crows, etc, mostly hovering around the fish nets of the fishermen. Apparently, the fishing is very good here.
Food, sight-seeing and shopping: Most of our time was spent on the boat. However, as soon as we left the docks, the boat docked on a nearby island where the fisherman were selling pearls and other precious stones. This young man of 22- 22 years came on our boat and tried to sell the pearls. The pearls were harvested from the clams right in front of our eyes but I am not sure of the quality of these pearls. Our taxi driver had warned us about these pearl sellers.
