High Altitude Zoo, also known as Pt. G.B. Pant High Altitude Zoo, is located at an altitude of about 6,900 feet in Nainital, Uttarakhand. It is situated on the Sher Ka Danda Hill.
This zoo was founded in the year 1984 but was open to public only in 1995 and has now become one of the popular tourist hotspots in this area. It is spread over an area of over 11,000 acres and is one of the few of its kind besides those situated in Darjeeling and Sikkim. This zoo in Nainital is also popular as it was home to the only Siberian Tiger in India which was brought to India in 2001. It died in November 2011.
From royal Bengal tigers and Tibetan wolves to leopard cats and Himalayan bears, the zoo is home to several endangered species. A large species of birds including kalij pheasant, Lady Amherst pheasant, rose-ringed parakeet, golden pheasant, and red jungle fowl among many others are given shelter at this zoo. It also has night shelters and bird enclosures with curtains during the winter months.
Located about 2 kilometres from the Tallital bus station of Nainital, you can hire a taxi to conveniently travel to this unusual zoo.
