"Kerala is Backwaters"

  • 6.0/7
  • Posted Jan 6, 2012
They say, Kerala is where Alleppey is. And thatís the only gist of my review. Kerala is just Alleppey, the speciality of Kerala is backwaters. Thatís the only unique theme of Kerala tourism and Alleppey is the place for it.
The houseboat travels from your check-in to 5.20 pm, when they drop the anchor irrespective of anything. All the houseboat drivers & crew members come under a union which decides everything. So you will find rates, timings, routes everything fixed and rigid. But nevertheless, it will be your best experience. After 5.20 pm, the boat is parked at its designated place and the captain leaves, the crew gets busy in preparing dinner for you while you wait in the houseboat without any activity. Depending on the season your inconvenience would vary, in summer it could be horrible because the ACs in bedroom will start only after 9 pm. Also there could be insects bothering you in the evening if you are sitting in the deck.
You might opt for a day trip which will begin at 10-10.30 am and end at 5.30 pm. Go back to you hotel and relax.
But if you are there for overnight stay, in the morning at 8.00 am they will take you on an hourís extra ride. But nothing much lost even if you opt for day-cruise. The overnight cruises start from 12.00-12.30 noon which is two hours later than day trip. Moreover overnight cruises are much more expensive too.
Kumarakom and Alleppey have same themes Ė backwaters. The Kumarkom houseboats are more expensive and if you take Alleppey, you also can visit the beach. Although Alleppey beach is not good for swimming.

Food, sight-seeing and shopping: Go for a houseboat cruise. A day time cruise will be great. You can bargain and ask them to start early. A day cruise can be done from 10 am to 5 pm, which is more than enough. However with little inconvenience you may also opt for overnight stay in the houseboat. In that case you will start at 12 noon and check-out the next day at 9 am.
Sikaras aren't very safe they say and also not confortable for long sitting. Motorboat is not the right vehicle to enjoy the backwaters I think. Backwater is serene and silent theme, we should relax and enjoy it in a houseboat, rushing through it with motorboat will jeopardize the whole theme I feel.

Activities & things to do: Houseboat cruises, a short motorboat ride, canoe ride.

Travel tips, How to reach, travel warnings etc: Avoid going during peak seasons, the rates of houseboats become 3-4 times during the peak seasons. If you go during summer I think it will be very bad because of the heat. The ACs in the bedroom work only during nights. Also during monsoon you have to be careful as the winds are strong and even the sightseeing is not very clear. Go during winter but avoid holidays so be prepared to pay heavy premium which is not justified.

Alleppey is such a superb location for a family trip..We should not miss a Houseboat journey of Day and Night. Alleppey is a magical place, full of Lakes, Canals, oats..really beautiful..
For our journey, we opted Amrutham Houseboats. We already had done the bookings from Bangalore itself through online.

Food, sight-seeing and shopping: Food was really awesome...
Lunch : Rice, Veg Curries, Fish Fry, Prawn (Houseboat guys helped us to buy prawns from local sellers for less price..)

Tea-Snacks - Cutlet, Banana Fry

Dinner : Chappathi, Gopi Manchurian, Chicken Curry, Rice, etc..

They offered Candle Light Dinner, Cake Cutting and Flowerbed decoration in night.

Activities & things to do: Fish Catching
Games - Carroms, chess, etc.
There was an Upper deck in boat..where the beautiful view of the complete lake is enjoyable.

Travel tips, How to reach, travel warnings etc: Reach them

"Drifting Trip in Backwaters of Kerela."

  • 6.0/7
  • Posted Nov 22, 2011
I went to Kerala trip from 19 Jan 2011 and travel to Trivandrum, Kochi & Alleppey. I had the most beautiful travel experience to Backwaters in Alleppey.

Food, sight-seeing and shopping: Kerala dishes were awesome-fish curries, dals cooked in coconut oil. All these foods were lip-smackingly tasty.
The sight in the backwaters with house boats sailing slowly, the cool breeze blowing through the air, everything around made me feel as if I was watching a Hollywood movie.. It gave me a wow experience!!!

Activities & things to do: Its a leisure destination. One could do photography of water birds and plants. The Kerala landscapes provide outdoor photography a different experience.

Travel tips, How to reach, travel warnings etc: Kerala is favorable travel destination. There people welcome you with a different approach and friendly attitude. People treat you with so much warmth & love that you hardly experience anywhere in India. Alleppey can be reached by trains, buses & cars. But if one is going on holidays, be bit extravagant and spend on taxis. Travel by taxis give a unique experience to know people & the places.

Alappuzha or Alleppey as is popularly known as is really meant to be GODS OWN COUNTRY with plenty of backwater beauty & Coconut plantations.

Food, sight-seeing and shopping: There are a few well known Silk Saree shops where you can shop for the famous Kerala Silk.
The whole place including the journey of reaching to & fro from your destination resort is Sight seeing only. Not to miss is the Backwater Ride on a speedboat.
One can get decent food of choice but be sure to enquire and inform the hotel well in advance about your preferences.

Activities & things to do: As mentioned the best activity is a Backwater ride. You can have a scromptous dinner on the riverside restaurant.Indoor games are available at the reception.

Travel tips, How to reach, travel warnings etc: You need to book your car in advance. The nearest railway station Allapuzha is 20-30 kms from the destined resorts. Also consider that in certain resorts you have to move by their private boats as there is no Road connection to them.Do carry a strong mosquito repellent and a torch in your travel kit.

Backwaters with scenic beauty and excellent relaxation.

Food, sight-seeing and shopping: Restaurants near the banks.

Activities & things to do: Boating,we went in a small boat which can accomodate 6 passengers, boatman took us through the big wide backwaters and slowly to the smaller inner canals. We could see big house boats and also small one's which can accomodate a single person.Saw a lady of 50+ collecting shells from the river/canal by diving into the water beautifully. Had tea from the riverisde eatery. Small cottages on the sides......all together great experience and for two hours we paid 700 rupees only.

Travel tips, How to reach, travel warnings etc: 60 - 70 km from Cochin, state run buses (KSRTC) and cabs. We took one hour 15 minutes for the drive.
