every bengali visits darjeeling atleast thrice in life1)in school days along with parents during summer vacation2)with wife for honeymoon3)along with wife & children.last november when i reached darjeeling ,this was actually my 5th visit this time, with my wife & child& in a time when bengalis have found new love in gangtok rejecting old darling darjeeling for fear of disturbance .after staying 4 nights in darjeeling,i felt, the hill queen is also feeling lonely, weeping silently for lack of tourists but the spirit of darjeeling is grossly intact.

Food, sight-seeing and shopping: i took joy ride in toy train from darjeeling to looked like mini world.tourists from london,paris,japan,mumbai,gujrat.....all were waiting to have a memorable journey in heritage train.when we reached BATASIA LOOP ,the train against the background of snow white kanchanjunga looked like a true himalayan queen.

THE MALL is as beautiful as ever....i was overjoyed to have a cup of nice tea with typical darjeeling flavor at only rs 5.The back side of mall where the old lady sang rabindrasangeet in satyajit rays movie KANCHANJANGHA is now lovers paradise.i also felt nostalgic & my 2 yr old son was silently watching hills to give us some space.

Next morning when i reached TIGER HILL at 5 o clock morning i remembered poor RABINDRANATH TAGORE who failed to see sunrise at tiger hill in his all 7 visits due to cloud but i was lucky again to enjoy a breath taking sun rise.the foreign tourists were awe struck.i found one gujrati couple to utter MANTRA while observing the color changes on kanchanjunga.darjeeling is place for RED PANDA son was excited to see the activities of red panda in zoo...adjacent to mountaineering institute.

Activities & things to do: dont miss evening snacks in glenery or keventers may visit mirik lake & can shop in pashupoti market ,nepal on in mall area is a lovely can trek to sandakfu.or can take mountaineering training in institute

Travel tips, How to reach, travel warnings etc: if you have motion sickness go darjeeling from njp through main road.otherwise go through is shorter & view is better.chose a hotel in mall ....try heritage hotels .....kanchanjunga is best visible in october .....fix a date in october end after durgapuja festival is over.always book toy train in advance like normal train booking.darjeeling mail uttarbanga express kanchankonya express are good option from kolkata (sealdah)but flight to bagdogra is better option.from njp to darjeeling ,its 3 hr journey by car & 7 hrs by toy train.

"Darjeeling - Wow - Queen of mountains"

  • 6.0/7
  • Posted May 11, 2010
We were moving in clouds for 70 percent of times. People there are very clean and helpful (unlike my experience with locals at Gangtok). Local sight seeing is worth every rupee (again unlike in Gangtok).

Food, sight-seeing and shopping: 1. Shopping - Mall road - great
2. Food - through out Darjeeling - great
3. Sight seeing - see Mirik lake - tiger hills - pashupati nagar - and many tea gardens - its worth the climb

Activities & things to do: Go mountain climbing - very exciting. Chill out in the room balcony - very exciting again

Travel tips, How to reach, travel warnings etc: If you can afford - fly directly to Bagdora and take a Taxi to Darjeeling. If you want to go economical - go by train to Kolkatta and take a train to NJP or Siliguri. You get bus from Siliguri at 100 rs. Taxi will cost you 1200 rs. Dont go by sharing taxi - its a bad experience.

"Land of Gorkhas"

Crowded yet calm streets.

Food, sight-seeing and shopping: North Indian vegetarian food available. Not to miss sunrise at tiger Hill in the early morning

Activities & things to do: Shopping especially for Darjeeling and woolen clothes.

Travel tips, How to reach, travel warnings etc: Please don't try to travel by toy train from Siliguri to Darjeeling as the exercise will take one full day and also the journey may be disrupted by landslides etc.

"Calm and serene"

Darjeeling is definitely queen of hills but the strikes and agitations have made a bad impact still its worth going there.

Food, sight-seeing and shopping: Kanika veg restaurant near Fortune resort is best I found in town for veg food, priced equally good.
Glenary and Frank Ross cafe on Chaurastha are great for a quick snack and everything at Glenary's is wonderful.

Activities & things to do: For the first timers, rock garden and tiger hill are must. Zoo and mountaineering institute are really informative.

Travel tips, How to reach, travel warnings etc: Get share taxi or if you hire your own go via Mirik lake, Pashupatinath market

"Magnificent Chotamangwa"

  • 6.0/7
  • Posted Nov 27, 2009
Chotamangwa is bound to be the most happening destination in the Darjeeling Himalayas in the near future. Myself & my family were fortunately the first guests at the Darjeeling Blossoms accommodation there. Our host, Mr. M.K.Pradhan is a splendid person. Chotamangwa is situated about 5 kms. uphill from Baramangwa.

Food, sight-seeing and shopping: Food including the evening barbecue is home-fresh and can be ordered as per your very own preferences; though options are a bit limited- why? Know more about Chotamangwa & you'll know. Host of sights await you to be seen but no traditional sight-seeing spots. Orange orchards are beautiful; a natural cave and what not. You'll definitely miss shopping...but don't miss the emerald Teesta from the viewpoint within the cottage compound itself.

Activities & things to do: Watch the Kanchanjungha massif (it appears as if it's floating in the sky) right from the comfort of your cottage bed. The sunrise from behind the eastern Kalimpong hills, sunset and moondown can be watched from the same spot right away. Trekking, star watching (no electricity connexion yet-but one has to be there to feel how exciting it can be), bird-watching & basking in the winter sunshine are just some of the enjoyable activities we tried out.

Travel tips, How to reach, travel warnings etc: From Siliguri (well connected to any part of India by road, rail & Bagdogra airport) by road to Teestabazar from where Chotamangwa is about 10 kms. uphill. The last km. is not motorable even till now. But the 15 minutes trek through the jungle & orange orchards punctuated by giant Adam's needle bushes is exceptionally refreshing.
