"sigandur islands"

  • Posted Dec 20, 2010
Sigandur islands is a place 380kms from Bangalore and 100km from Shimoga and 30kms from Sagara and its a heaven for watersports and island adventure Kodachadri is near to it and Evenmupanae famous trekking spot is near it and Kollur is near it.

Food, sight-seeing and shopping: Sight seeing is Mupanae, Jogfalls, Kodachadri and Kollur and for food and accommodation you can go to Sigandur homestay. It is run by an NGO so food is given from houses of locals which is very fresh neat and hot.

Activities & things to do: Watersports and island adventures and they conduct a activity called water safari that is from Sigandur to Kodachadri by water that is water trekking for 15kms and night stay at Kodachadri that is really magnificent.

Travel tips, How to reach, travel warnings etc: Bangalore --Sagar--Sigandur==380kms reach by 5pm or else u will not get the launch a ship to reach the island.

"Nice Place, Bad Roads"

  • Posted Nov 6, 2010
The road towards Shimoga was horrible. I left Pune-Bangaluru highway from Harihar towards Shimoga and the last 40-50 KM stretch was pathetic. I would like to discourage anybody from traveling on that road especially at night time.

Food, sight-seeing and shopping: Just visited Jog Falls. I think it was a wrong season to visit Jog Falls, but the road was very scenic if we ignore the bad patches in between.

Activities & things to do: Lots of destinations to visit. Unfortunately did not visit all the places.

Travel tips, How to reach, travel warnings etc: From Pune:
Start on Pune-Bangalore highway straight till Harihar, via Satara, Kolhapur, Belgaum, Hubli, Haveri. Then leave the highway and take the road straight to Shimoga.

"Enchanting Shimoga"

  • Posted Sep 14, 2009
A secret hideaway from the usual tourist destinations in Karnataka. A decent time to travel would be during / just after rains. We travelled during September, still pouring all the time. A serene location that is unperturbed by the city life. A must visit if you want a good doze of much needed Oxygen!

Food, sight-seeing and shopping: Food is typical South Indian. Please ask the local rikshaw drivers for good places to eat. They will guide. Attractions ofcourse is Asia's highest water falls- Jog Falls - a must see. There are various points from where you can view the falls in different angles. Other attractions include 2 ancient temples - Ikkeri & Keladi, which can be covered after an early visit to Jog Falls. Also visit Koodli temple, where rivers Tunga & Bhadra merge. A must watch. If time permits, make a trip to Sikandur. The journey starts with a Bus ride, follwed by jhankar to cut across the river Sharavathi (jhankar=a huge carrier that carries vehicles and people) and continue by bus again.
Also available are bird sanctuaries, trekking spots, dam etc., which can be completed if time permits.

Activities & things to do: Travel as much as you can around Shimoga. The green paddy fields are an amazing sight to watch
Do not miss any of the ancient temples, they are extremely beautiful

Travel tips, How to reach, travel warnings etc: Travel from Shimoga to Sagara because most places can be covered from here.
Have an umbrella always.
The condition of roads is bad, take buses so you can travel fast and comfortably. A taxi / auto can leave with a bad back ache.
You can reach by buses / trains. Frequent trains ply between Bangalore to Shimoga Town.
