Marvelous architecture ...
In fact, it is now called St. Joseph Cathedral (St. Philomena Shrine).
Daytime the architecture is A-one, but at night, the place looks stunning.

"Great Architecture"

Could see this beautiful church only from the outside as some renovations are going on and no one is allowed to go inside right now. But still was worth visiting. The whole feel in this place was very calming. Walking around the towering structure is a very humbling experience. Really enjoyed the serenity and silence all around.

"An Impressive Neo Gothic Architecture - St Philomenas Church"

  • 6.5/7
  • Posted Jul 5, 2016
If you are in Mysore, apart from the Mysore Palace and The Chamundi Hills, you have to visit an impressive architecture. St. Philomena's Church is one of the oldest and largest churches in India.
The prominent feature are the two spires and can be seen from a distance. This Neo-gothic style, was built way back in 1843, this was built primarily for the British officers stations at Srirangapatnra and around Mysore. Philomena, was a Grecian Princess, martyred in the 4th century. One of her relics was obtained by Thamboo Chetty, secretary of the Maharaja of Mysore in 1926.
Underneath the alter, stairs lead us down below the crypt, sort of like a little chapel called a catacomb where lies the priceless statue of St. Philomena in a reclining position, the preserved relics of the saint along with it. Along the corridor, are names of thousands, that try to tell a story. Walking past this, you emerge back to the outside where the tall structure stands. It is both ironic as well as interesting that his church was built by a French architect, in German Gothic style, for the British soldiers, that was paid for by a Hindu King!

Close to bus-stand [walking distance - if you love walking]; magnificent facade, uncrowded. Best to go during morning when the opportunity to take pictures is best.

St. Philomena's Church, also known as St. Joseph’s Church, is a colossal church which is over 200 years old. It was Maharaja Krishnaraja Wodeyar III, who laid the foundation for St. Philomena's Church in 1933, on the site of a small church built by his father. The construction of St. Philomena's Church was completed in the year 1941.

St. Philomena's Church, which is built in the Gothic Style, preserves the 3rd century relic of St. Philomena in a catacomb below the main altar. The floor plan of St. Philomena's Church is based on the Holy Cross. The ‘nave’ of the cross is the Congregation Hall, the two arms are the transepts and the crossing consists of altar and the choir.

The idols of St. Philomena and Holy Christ are placed on the marble altar in the Sanctum sanctorum. There are stained glass windows above the Sanctum sanctorum with paintings depicting the birth of Jesus Christ, the Last Supper, the Crucifixion, the Resurrection and the Ascension of Christ.

The most attractive feature of St. Philomena's Church is the spires. There are two towers or spires that are about 54 meters tall, which resemble the spires of St. Patrick's Church of New York.

St. Philomena's Church is considered to be one among the largest Cathedrals of South Asia. Located at a distance of about 2 km from Mysore Palace, St. Philomena's Church has become a major tourist attraction of Mysore.
