Trichy Experience: Trichy is a bustling city in the central part of Tamil Nadu, trying to outgrow itself of its past. In the last 15 year, the city has transformed itself into a regional hub for business and educational activities, yet remaining its ancient facade and historical background intact.I visited Trichy to be connected to my roots, as my mother is an Indian and this was my long lost visit to Trichy after almost 22 years ago.
Food, sight-seeing and shopping: Trichy offers a variety of typical South Indian dishes and gourmet, probably like any other cities in Tamil Nadu with the exception of Chennai, which is now bustling with modern and western menu on its list of food offerings.
Trichy maintains it historical beginnings and still exhibits its colonial buildings and its administrative relics. Food at the Thai Restaurant was very palatable, situated near the Tillai Nagar. We had very good 'roti chanai', an equivalent to Poratha in Malaysia.
Activities & things to do: A few of the must things that's on my list to visit in Trichy are as follows:
- the Mookombu dam in the evening, a pleasant walk on the dam is refreshing.
- the famous Sri Renggam and Thiruvanaikkaval temples, giving the contrast of Vaishanavite and Saivite temple architectures almost next to each other
-The design of Kollidam as a way to contain the Kaveri river and its flooding.
-The rock fort temple and its surroundings, a sight by itself
- a visit to any one of its suburb village near the Kaveri upstream, to appreciate the 'greens' of Tamil Nadu.
Travel tips, How to reach, travel warnings etc: Some tips that i follow:
-dress very casually, usually in cotton clothing's.
-do not hassle with the 'auto' drivers, most of the time they are very polite.
-do not over eat or eat a lot of spicy foods through out the day.
-if you can speak Tamil, it is definitely an extra advantage, even tough English is perfectly alright.
