Rohru Info

  • State: Himachal Pradesh
  • Famous for/as: Pilgrimage
  • District: Shimla
Situated at an average elevation of 1,525 metres, Rohru is a municipal committee located in Shimla District in the state of Himachal Pradesh. This beautiful town of Himachal Pradesh is situated along the banks of River Pabbar.

The destination is known for the cultivation of apples, among which ‘rich red’ and ‘royal delicious’ are the most popular ones. Apart from the apples, Rohru is also an ideal location for trout fishing, which can be done at River Pabbar.

The history of fishing can be traced back to the time of Raja Bajrang Bahadur Singh of Bahadh. He was immensely attracted to this place and therefore decided to develop it into a location, which will be perfect for anglers. Other than trout fishing, paragliding, trekking and hang gliding are some of the activities that are available in Rohru.

Besides activities, some of the most prominent attractions of the destination include Shikru Devta Temple, Chirgaon and Chanshal range. In addition, the villages of Kwar and Dodra can also be visited.

With the availability of several modes of transportation such as flights, trains and buses, tourists can reach the destination easily. Those travelling by air can board flights to Shimla Airport.  Shimla Railway Station, located at a distance of 127 km is the nearest railhead serving the destination. However, the major railhead is Kalka Railway Station.

In addition to flights and trains, the destination is also accessible by buses. These buses are operated by Himachal Pradesh Road Transport Corporation, which connect Rohru with other cities of the state and neighbouring states as well. The best time to visit Rohru extends from the month of March to November.

"Apples are one thing that you find everywhere"

An scenic location located near the foothills of Himalayas. Friendly and sweet people. Road from shimla to rohru is what gives you the boost you require for your soul. life has its own slow pace but meaningful attitude. Apples are one thing that you find everywhere. Traditional lamb dried in turmeric and salt with a bottle of rum is the best armour against the chilling cold.

"A small place known for apples"

  • 4.5/7

Haathkoti temple is one of the most quiet temple, where you can't find many tourists, it's a must watch if you go to Rohru. Also there is a small bridge on the river Pabbar which is a must visit in Rohru. Else it is a small place with lots of apples to eat and lots a fresh air to inhale.

"ROHRU in summer."

  • 6.0/7
  • Posted May 27, 2013
Rohru has one of the most beautiful typical mountain river, PABBAR. It is not small. Had plenty of water even during our visit in late May. The temperatures this year were unusually high, about 33 or 34. That dampened our spirits of roaming around the valley. Also, there are no tourist destinations within reasonable distance. Most tourist villages are about 35 to 40 Kms. away. It is surrounded on all sides with low mountains. No snow is visible from the town.

Food, sight-seeing and shopping: No good places to eat. We therefore largely ate at the Hotel. Ordinary food.
We made a quick visit to Hatkoti which has a 8th century temple, with Hateshwari Devi as the main deity. The temple is clean and nice. There were no crowds when we went. Only two other people. Unfortunately ALL roads are bad. Driving was painful and very taxing both on the car and the passengers. Jubbal is not far away but we could not muster up courage to face more bad roads. There is virtually no unique shopping here. We could find some fresh cherries coming down from the mountain slopes. They were nice.

Activities & things to do: Not in this season and this weather. I would like to think that other parts of the year would be nice here.

Travel tips, How to reach, travel warnings etc: The road journey from Tiuni to here, a distance of 45 Kim's., took us over two and a half hours because of atrocious road condition. We decided to come back here only when the roads are drive able.
