History of Sasan-Gir

Sasan-Gir or the Gir Forest National Park is located in the Indian state of Gujarat. Spread across an area of 1412 square km, this sanctuary was established in 1965 to protect the dwindling population of lions. Today, it is the only place where Asiatic Lions can be found, and that makes it one of Asia's most important protected areas. The Gir National Park experiences a tropical monsoon climate with extreme hot and humid conditions during the summer months of May to August. The sanctuary remains closed to visitors during the summer months. Apart from being the only home of the reclusive Asiatic Lions, it also has various other species of flora and fauna, which give it a rich bio-diversity. It is estimated that this reserve in Gujarat has more than 38 species of mammals, approximately 300 species of birds and 2000 insect species. Of the mammals, the Asiatic Lion was counted at 411 a few years back. Various efforts have been undertaken by the government and nature enthusiasts to preserve the rare species of lion. One of these efforts has been setting up of the Lion breeding programme. Under this program, breeding centres for the Asiatic lion have been set up in various parts of the state to increase their population.

Things To Do in Sasan-Gir

The centre also studies the behaviour of the Asiatic Lion and carries out advanced studies on this lion species. Things to do in Sasan-Gir The sightseeing attractions of Sasan-Gir include a vast range starting from Sasan-Gir National Park, which is the most popular attraction in the place. This national park has been confirmed as the safest place for breeding the endangered species of Gir lions. It is home to 400 species of flora and 2375 species of fauna. Another important attraction in the place is Kamleshwar Dam, which is situated in the centre of Sasan-Gir National Park. This dam is built over Hiran River, which is one of the seven rivers that drain in the area of Gir Sanctuary. Tourists can opt for Sasan-Gir holiday packages for a wholesome wildlife experience. The concerted efforts have reaped rich dividends with the population of Asiatic lions going up from 15 in 1990 to over 400 presently. However, this has posed a new problem for the authorities. Now, many believe that the Gir National Park is overpopulated and a part of the lion population must be relocated to a new place. A popular site, which was recommended for this initiative, is the Palpur-Kuno Wildlife Sanctuary. This sanctuary, lying 65 away from the princely state of Junagadh, does not have well designated tourist areas. To overcome this problem and to protect the ecology of the area, interpretation zones have been set up to allow tourists to get close to nature while still protecting the wildlife. Travelling to Sasan-Gir The rich flora and fauna of the region and the opportunity of spotting one of the rarest species of lions attracts a lot of tourists each year to Sasan-Gir. Sasan-Gir does not have a train station.

To reach Sasan-Gir, board a train to the nearest station is Junagadh, at a distance of 23 kms from Sasan-Gir. The best time to visit the destination is between December and March.

Accommodation options in Sasan-Gir There are many hotel options in Sasan-Gir for tourists. Travellers can choose from lodges, camps and resorts within the sanctuary to budget hotels located close to the wildlife sanctuary.

Sasan gir is one of the weekend getaway options for travelers living in Somnath and Verawal.

"Awesome experience seeing wild lions"

Lions is what you want to see in the wild and its an awesome experience seeing those lions walk across your open jeep right in front of you.
They are least bothered about your presence and they choose to ignore unless you want them to notice you ; in that case be ready to face them ;)

Superb amazing experience. Perfect weekend gateway and memorising adventurous experience. One should get online permit for Sasan and Devaliya. Devaliya, you can get surity to get a glimpse of lion/lioness. Small artificial habitat where you can get glimpse of whole Gir in small area. Half an hour trip will be there. Whereas in Sasan in is open gypsy safari of 3 hours slot. For 6 am trip, you should go and collect guide name and permit copy from interpretation centre before half an hour. I. E. 5. 30 am
If you are lucky you will get glimpse of lion, chance I. 65%

"Except stay in asiatic lion lodge other thinks were excellent"

I visited divaliya park in the morning before 1100 hrs as it closes after 1100 hrs and also on wednesday. The tickets for ride in their buses are available for rs. 150 per head and it will take about 30 minutes ride to the park. In the park you can see lion, tigers, dear, etc. So far visit to gir forest is concerned that could not be materialized because for that you have to get permit online well in advance and not available on reception or online.

"Nice place to relax and enjoy the wildlife at Gir"

  • 7.0/7
  • Posted Nov 4, 2016
We stayed for 2 nights at Gir jungle lodge in Sasan Gir. It was a peaceful and relaxed stay. We enjoyed the wildlife safari and Devalia park safari. We also went to Kankai Mata temple in the jungle which is worth visiting. The stay at Gir jungle lodge hotel was worthwhile. We had a peaceful and relaxed away from the city life. It was a wonderful and memorable trip. Looking for more such trips.

"Feel the serenity of nature and thrill of watching the King of the Jungle"

  • 5.5/7
  • Posted Oct 21, 2016
If you want to become one with nature after the daily hustle bustle of city life and stress of Office, Gir is the perfect place. Time it right and you have all the ingredients of a perfect holiday. Book a resort a bit far off from the main town. Beware of fakes. Read the reviews before booking them. Carry your books and camera with you because the Safari will take only part of your day and cellular network is pathetic. Don't forget to register yourself for the permit on the Government website well in advance. That is the only legal safari. Also carry your original ID that you used during registration. Ideal time is beginning of the season I. E. Second half of October because the monsoons are just over and the climate is quite pleasant and jungle is all green. Well that is also a problem as the greenery reduces the visibility drastically thus reducing your chances of siting Lions/Lioness. However you may turn out lucky just as we did. We could site a pride of 10 Lions/Lioness after 2 hours of desperation and giving up the hope. The golden rule is book for a morning safari and don't give up hope. Also if you are unable to site a Lion/Lioness don't worry, their are several other species to look out for. You will be surprised ... Even a rare variety of bird will make you feel contented and blessed. Their is place called 'Devalia' which is a 16 Sq Km enclosure where they offer you a 30 min mini bus ride. But in case you can go for a proper safari and are able to site some good species of birds and animals I will suggest you avoid Devalia. The reason is the crowded bus and the noise generated by the crowd even on siting a humble deer. AVOID DEVALIA if you can manage SAFARI. Carry your Binoculars and a jacket or pullover in case going for a morning safari. Also lots (they make a screen in front of your vehicle) of insects slithering down the Sagwan tree and you would be in an open Gypsy. So cover your hair ... Wear a cap or a hat ... Don't forget to taste the Kathiyawadi Food. It is different from the traditional Gujarati Thali that you get in the cities.

"Beautiful Wild Life at Gir National Forest"

  • 6.0/7
  • Posted Jun 7, 2016
It was a life time experience to do the lion safari at Gir National Forest at Sasan Gir. First of all they only issue 50 permits per day for this safari and anyone can book the safari through Internet paying rs800/- weekdays and RS 1000/- for weekend and holidays. Anyone can book the permit 3 months early prior to their visit date. So if any one think we just go there and do the safari, it is not possible. For them one open zoo is there and bus service is there.. Anyone can go by bus and see the zoo animals.. And for that no advance permit is needed. By the way we had opted for evening safari which had started around 3:15pm and cover around 45 kms and ended at 6:30 pm. We had come from Somnath which is one and half hours drive to Gir Forest. Our reporting time at reception was 2:30 PM.. We have reached early. There was a beautiful museum which everyone should visit to know the forest. First we had to submit our permit and valid photo I card of every member.. Then they have allotted an open gypsy and guide for the tour which will cost RS 1550/- that you have to pay in cash in front of them.. Camera charge is Rs 200/-extra but Mobile is free. Our safari experience was wonderful because we have seen one leopard, one lion and one lioness first and four lioness at second time.. Total one lion and 5 lioness. Besides three nilgai and plenty of deers and monkeys. The forest is very dry and full of red soil dust which is the natural habitat of lion...

"Excellent tourist destination to see wild Asiatic lions"

  • 7.0/7
  • Posted Jun 3, 2016
It was my dream to see Asiatic lions in the wild. Was planning the tour in my mind from many years. Thank God, at last I could make it in successful way.

Thanks for Gir National Park authority, who gave every detail information on their safari booking website Gir online permit booking system. I did the booking of Gir jungle trail of 30th May 2016. Morning 9am to 12 pm. After confirmation of safari booking I get the hotel booked through Makemytrip. Hotel Annapurna in Sasan Gir.

As I was sure of safari, I then planned the travel surrounding these days. I started my journey from Kolhapur, Maharashtra.

As I could see two adolescent lions & one lioness during my 3 hr safari, it was a fruitful trip. The whole drama of seeing these majestic, beautiful, awesome, formidable animals lasted only for few minutes but these moments became one of the memorable moments of my life. Seeing a wild lion from a feet distance was a icing on the cake. These moments can't be orchestrated. But in these excited moments, I took many good pictures of lions.

It was so exciting & touching that I forgot tiring journey from Kolhapur to Mumbai(420 km 8 hrs by bus), Mumbai to Rajkot(by air-50 min journey) then Rajkot to Sasan Gir (by car-170 km-5hrs). The day was so hot my T shirt was wet by sweat. But at last my wish & desire to see these giants paid off. Thanks to Forest department, Gujarat for saving these majestic lions who were at stage of extinction in 1967.

Also thanks to Gujarat Govt for making nice advertisement of Sasan Gir lion sanctuary. Mr Amitabh Bachchan, also helped for the advertisement.

If you are a wildlife tourist, you must have Sasan Gir jungle trail in your list of destinations. Also nice Reading about Asiatic lions & jungle safaris with good guide is essential for successful viewing of animals including leopards( I don't able to see in my safari), spotted deers, blue bulls, Sambar deer. I see them in flocks.

Bye & have a nice trip to Sasan Gir.

MakeMyTrip helped me a lot during booking of hotels in Sasan Gir & Rajkot. Its Mobile app is really fast. & Gives plenty of discounts.

"Must visit"

  • 6.0/7
  • Posted May 22, 2016
The experience to Sasan gir is one which cannot be defined. It is just amazing and fantastic. The lion safari is one for which you will have to book in advance and jeep can be booked from there once you have the permit for the safari. If you plan for the safari and are not able to get the permit, try the devaliya park. It is interpretation zone for Sasan gir. You can see the lions in their natural habitat, it is some experience that one cannot get in a zoo. The lions are not to be teased otherwise one cannot escape the wrath. One can see animals in natural habitat. One must prefer going early morning because lions being lazy animals, they prefer sleep in the rest of the day because of heat. An experience to feel. There is also a souvenir shop there but I would suggest to get the souvenir from the shop in the city as it is cheap there.
