Tawang Reviews

Tawang Experience: Tawang is a remote and incredibly beautiful place. It is off the beaten path of normal tourist routes. The journey to Tawang is breathtaking. Visit the place if you appreciate solitude and simplicity. There are no pubs or discotheques or shopping malls. Long walks are the best way to explore and get the feel of the town.
Food, sight-seeing and shopping: Restaurants are practically non-existent. We ate all our meals at our hotel. Sight-seeing is plenty and in all directions. Nature offers its best in terms of landscape. Shopping is very basic with small stores selling woollen goods, herbal medicines, groceries etc. The Arunachal Pradesh Emporium is moderately stocked.
Activities & things to do: Long walks !! The locals are very friendly. We ended up visiting a school and spending time with the children there.
Travel tips, How to reach, travel warnings etc: We hired a tourist cab from Guwahati. The town is accessible only by road. Travelling to Tawang from October to February is not adivisable due to extreme cold climatic conditions.

"Best of Best" new review

Tawang Experience: Can't say about the Heaven on earth-Kashmir or of the blue mountains of of western ghats, but if you are somehow there in NE India and got the guts of an adventurer then dont forget to add Tawang in your itinerary. Located in the far east corner of India among the China and Bhutan border its a must visit for any braveheart.
Food, sight-seeing and shopping: When in Tawang, be someone of Tawang. Dont miss the journey to Bumla, the end point of India and feel the patriot in you. A visit to the Tsangester lake (popular as Madhuri Lake) is a must in journey list too. Apart from that a trip to Khinjamin would be a nice experience too. And don't miss the feel of sipping hot soup our devouring Thukpa and Momo in the cool evening.

Travel tips, How to reach, travel warnings etc: Tawang could be reached both by air and road. But I would suggest road, as for me the travel itself is a cherished memory and in this way you could travel through some of the most amazing places and be a part of the history. But again the travel is not for some leisure loving and weak heart people. And be extra cautious while travelling in the months of Dec-March.

"UNEXPLORED BEAUTIFUL NORTH EAST INDIA"

Tawang Experience: Tawang is a very beautiful places and almost virgin place, where very few people goes due to difficulty in travelling. From Guwahati, Tawang is approx. 225 Kms. away and it takes approx. 12 to 14 hours to reach hence we have to take one stop in between. But after reaching Tawang, you forget all the trouble you have taken to reach their. India China Border, a place called Bhumla Pass is only 40 Kms. away from Tawang. Road to Bhumla pass from Tawang is worst but the scenenary outside is very good. The Indian Military people at Bhumla pass are very co-operative. They share their experiences with the citizens. Salute to them for staying their in severe cold.
Food, sight-seeing and shopping: Majority people in Tawang are Non Veg. so getting Veg food is little difficult. Most of the hotels are Non Veg. So strict veg. people find it diifficult to get the food. The biggest attraction in Tawang is Bhumla Pass and the Military museum. Military only take care of the same and their are lots of memories and monuments of India China War.
Activities & things to do: Their are no extra activities at this place.
Travel tips, How to reach, travel warnings etc: Only option to reach Tawang is by Road From Guwahati. Due to climatic conditions and Geographical situations roads are bad and the average speed of the vehicle would be max. 20 Kms. Hilly area, so the people who have problems in hilly conditions, will find it very difficult to reach their. Outside it is very green and beautiful, Hence if you don't have any problem of hills, you will enjoy the journey.

The nature of vegetation changes with altitude. The 20 Km ride from Sela pass is unreal. You'll find amazing flora amidst the crystal clear cascades. Amazing Chinese food, merchandises are available here. Surrounded by Monastries & beautiful spots. It's must visit once in life time and if you are tough enough to endure the journey may be second time is well worth the try. I personally advice elderly people to avoid the journey.

"Exotic Arunachal"

Tawang Experience: Our trip to the exotic Arunachal, the extreme North-eastern frontier of India was the culmination of many sleepless researching and meticulous planning and budgeting. Our round trip from Guwahati to Tawang and back to Guwahati took us six days and these six days mostly saw us on the roads jumping and bumping our way through the dusty terrains from one breathtaking curve to the other. Sometimes, the myriad shades of green canopied the mountain sides and at other times the white veil of clouds shrouded the mountain tops. At times, the roads would travel downward grazing the river banks only to climb upwards to cross mountain after mountain and at other times it would lose its way unmindfully in the dense clouds only to unfold before our eyes beauties galore. One waits in breathless anticipation what treasures of natural beauty would remain unexplored round the next turn, beauty many a times explored by human eye, yet unexplored. Amidst this luxurious green harmony lay discordant defense areas every here and there, reminding us every now and then of the scathing touch of mankind. On our way back from Tawang, the season’s first flakes of snow greeted us. Though locals at Tawang grumbled it was an untimely snowfall, yet we felt it could not have been more timely. As we gradually slipped and skidded down the road past Sela Pass in our Tata Victa, at every bend of the road, a spine chilling uncertainty awaited us, as we continued to freeze inside the car. As the day drew to an end did we reach the safety of the dry and dusty tracks and the next day saw us entering the hum drum of city life – Guwahati once more.
Food, sight-seeing and shopping: Our tour itinerary went thus: Chennai to Guwahati (rest for the day; as we hailed from Chennai, we gave ourselves a day at Guwahati before proceeding towards the Arunachal.) Day 1, Guwahati to Bomdilla (On the way orchidarium at Sessa, night halt at Bomdilla Tourist Lodge). Day 2, Bomdilla to Tawang (On the way Bomdilla monastery, hot water spring at Dirang, halt at Dirang valley for refreshment, halt at Sela Pass, world’s second highest Pass at 13,000 ft. where we get to see two crystal clear lakes in the lap of the rugged stone strewn mountains. At that height, one might feel a little scarcity of oxygen. After crossing Sela, next halt at Jung water falls, renowned for its breath taking beauty, then last stop at Jashwant Garh Memorial built in the memory of Shri Jashwant Singh, who laid his life fighting in order to stop the Chinese Army from crossing Indian border in 1962. Halt at Tawang Tourist Lodge that can be booked beforehand over telephone). Day 3, A visit to Sangetser Tso better known as Madhuri Lake. On the way to Madhuri Lake there is yet another beautiful lake, the PT Tso and various other nameless lakes which caught our attention for each of their individual beauty. The Madhuri lake is perhaps the epitome of beauty, quietitude, and calmness. Day 4, Visit to Tawang Monastery, War Memorial, and the local market ( We were advised to visit the Bumla Pass, a defense controlled area, noted for its stunning beauty. It required yet another permit other than the Inner Line Permit or ILP. Due to lack of time we could not make it.) Day 5, Return to Bomdilla from Tawang. Day 6, From Bomdilla back to Guwahati.
Activities & things to do: Be careful about breathing problem.
Travel tips, How to reach, travel warnings etc: We were aided in our tour plan by sites like www.indiamike.com, www.holidayiq.com, tawang.nic.in, arunachalpradesh.nic.in and Himalayan holidays etc. Furthermore, the District Tourism Officer at Bomdilla Mr. Riggio also helped us plan our conveyance. We contacted the Managing Director of Himalayan Holidays Mr. Tsering Wange who also helped us plan the tour and he provided us with the conveyance, a Tata Victa driven by Mr. Samar Das an young, confident and safe driver. The Tourist Lodge at Bomdilla (Rooms ranging from Rs. 400 – Rs. 600) cannot be booked from before, but generally rooms are available. In case it is booked there is yet another Guest House, the Doe-Gu-Khil Guest House near Gaden Rabgye Ling Monastery better known as the upper Gompa, which is very good though a bit costlier Tourist Lodge at Tawang. There are also Tourist Lodges at Dirang and Bhalukpong). Besides, we also contacted other authorized tour operators Mr. Abhijeet and Mr. Trideep.

"“Heaven on earth”"

Tawang Experience: Trips to beautiful places of Tawang (Aruanachal Pradesh) is popularly known as “heaven on earth” because of the bounty of multifarious counter of flora and fauna. The scenic beauty of Tawang is so immense and enchanting that everyone is naturally tempted to enjoy its natural glimpse. Making a journey to Tawang fills one up with inspirational and spiritual feeling and the person, so to speak, feels internally rejuvenated. Indeed, gazing at the enthralling beauty of Tawang makes a soothing effect both on heart and mind thus leaving behind indelible impressions the sweet memories of which never let us forget.
Food, sight-seeing and shopping: Adventure place Sela Pass (13800 ft) is a high-altitude mountain pass located in Tawang. The Sangetser and the Banggachang lakes with their deep blue water are simply awesome. Also visit the famous Nuranang Falls , Singsar Ani Gompa, the 700-year-old Gorsham Gompa and the Crafts Centre that produces carpets and masks with traditional Buddhist and Tibetan motifs. Food quality is very good, cheap and best.
Activities & things to do: Tawang is ideal for the outdoor enthusiast who loves trekking and hiking.
Travel tips, How to reach, travel warnings etc: Best time to visit month of March and October. By Air lines visit to Gauhati and Gauhati to Tejpur by Bus, From Tezpur you can hire a jeep or taxi to take you to Tawang via beautiful place like Bhalukpong, Bomdila, Dirang and adventure place Sela Pass (13,800 ft.). "Tawang - a paradise"

Tawang Experience: Tawang is a small but politically very important city of Arunachal Pradesh, India. As the city is adjacent to China border and always in threat from China, hence you might see more army man than civilian. But apart from this, Tawang is like god's own hand creation. The beautiful landscape of Tawang always invites the tourist with open hand and one who loves to enjoy to beauty of nature should come to Tawang for atleast one time. Everyone who love nature, is compeled to love Tawang.
Food, sight-seeing and shopping: You might find the rates of food slight costly than the other part as most of the things import from plains.Tawang is famous because of Tawang Monastry, which is situated in the hearts of the City. You should not miss the Buddhist feelings attached with this Monastry and it's impact on the people live here and outside Tawang. The War Memorial of Tawang is also a must see attraction. The memories of Indian Brave hearts who fought for the mother land and sacrificed their lives in the Indo-China war of 1962 will feel you proud. Other must see destinations are Sho-Nga-Tseir Lake, famously known as 'Madhuri Lake', Craft Centre etc. You might feel shopping is a costly activity in here. Still you can buy some home hand made articles.
Activities & things to do: Trekking and rafting and shooting with camera.
Travel tips, How to reach, travel warnings etc: In any condition you should bring woolen clothes with you. Tawang is a cold destination, in summer also. Daily Sumo Service is available from Tezpur to Tawang @ 650/- per head starting at 5.30 A.M. (morning) and reach tawang at around 8 to 9 P.M.(evening). The road is real concern for the travelers who wants to go to Tawang. Out of total 345 Km., only 40% of road is in good condition. The dust, fog and mud leads to a real hectic journey.

"Fairy Land of Northeast"

Tawang Experience: Tawang is a small town with Tawang Monastry (nearly 400 years old) as its major attraction. The beauty is pristine and breath taking. It is also a district head quarter. Tawang is significant from its strategic location which is nearly 50 kms from Indo-tibet border. It lies north of west Kameng district. It is still a beautiful place for a leisure holiday as not much of commercialisation is there. To visit Arunachal Indian citizens need Innerline permit, and made at Delhi/ Guwahati/ Tezpur and few other places.
Food, sight-seeing and shopping: There are few restaurants besides restaurants of hotels. Food available are plain and simple. Shops close as early as 5 - 6 P.M. Sunset is quite early (as for IST). Major attractions are Tawang Monastry, Ani Gompa, Urgeling Monastry (birth place of 6th Dalai Lama), War Memorial. The whole of Local site seeing can be completed in one day. You need one more day to visit PT Tso (Lake), Shengester Tso (Madhuri Lake) and Bumla (Indo-Tibet Border). We visited both PT Tso and local site seeing at Tawang in one day. Unfortunately we could not visit Madhuri lake & Bumla due to heavy snow fall and rain. Due to it we cut short our stay at Tawang to 2 days from 3 days. Shopping was out of question due to bad weather (rain).
Activities & things to do: Not much of activities, only strolling around enjoying the nature.
Travel tips, How to reach, travel warnings etc: We started early (6:30 AM) from Guwahati on 18th March 2011. Had lunch at Bhalukpong (12:30 PM) and reached Bomdilla at 04:30 PM. Night halt was at Bomdilla ( Govt. Tourist Rest House).Started next day (06:30 AM on 19th March) to Tawang. Had breakfast enroute at Dirang (2 hrs drive). Site seeing on the way ... Nyukmadung War Memorial, Sela Pass, Jaswantgarh War Memorial, Madhuri Falls. Had snacks at Jaswantgarh military canteen. Reached Tawang at 05:00 PM. Night halt at Govt. Tourist Lodge in Tawang. On 20th March local site seeing. started back to Bomdilla on 21st March (visited monastries at Dirang & Bomdilla - You should not miss the Upper Gompa at Bomdilla). On 22nd Mar 11 Started early morning (06:30 AM) to Guwahat and reached Guwahati at 4:30 PM. Though the strech can be done with small size car, SUV with 4 wheel drive is recommended. If self driving one should be extra careful between Balukpong and Bomdilla where one may encounter dense fog and cloud. Here you can experience driving through clouds. The weather at Sela pass is chilling. So before you step out at Sela Pass wear adequate Warm clothing with woollen cap or muffler. Our hired SUV (Innova) got stuck in the snow on the way back to Guwahati. Army Personnels are there to help keep the pass open for traffic and extend help to every body. Even we helped one Maruti 800 which got stuck in snow. So it is advisable to cross Sela pass before noon & have 4 wheel drive as weather is un predictable and goes bad generally in the afternoon. Start early in the morning so that the destination can be reached before dark. To visit Bumla pass, permit from Distric magistrate is required. Visted in mid March 2011. Best season is April - November

"Tawang"

Tawang Experience: A beautiful place; the drive to Tawang is as beautiful as the place too.
Food, sight-seeing and shopping: A gift shop in the Nefa hotel complex is a one stop shop for many artifacts. Do pick up the Buddhist prayer flags and monastry bells. Sightseeing: Monastries ( Tawang and Anni), Sungaster lake and the unsung heroes war memorial are not to be missed. The frozen lake near Sela pass is a beauty.
Activities & things to do: Enjoy the untouched natural beauty! There aren't any activities as such.
Travel tips, How to reach, travel warnings etc: Drive from Guwahati/Tezpur. Break journey at Bomdila or Dirang. Roads are a bit dicey; so give enough time for landslides and other unforeseen circumstances. Throughout the way, you will get basic food like dal chawal and vegetables; and at certain places maggi and momos. Give enough time to recuperate from the journey; even though we were a group of 20 year olds, we were a bit tired.

"RAW ARUNCHAL"

Tawang Experience: Nice for tension free stay if you are not expecting more than basic needs
Food, sight-seeing and shopping: I suggest everyone to go for simple food despite of trying the menu cards attractions. Shopping was not suggested except local mades. Bumla border & maduri lake are main attraction

Travel tips, How to reach, travel warnings etc: There is daily helicopter service from guwahati. Daily share taxi service from tezpur cost Rs.500 per person takes 15 hours but suggested. complete your journey in two days 1st day tezpur to bomdila and 2nd day from bomdila totawang. If you are travelling in group than hire cab cost Rs. 3000/- perday including gas & drivers food and stay. Inner line permit is requried to visit arunachalpradesh and for the visit of bumla border one permit is required which was issued from tawang

"land of monpas"

Tawang Experience: Unexplored mountain paradise of north east ,very scenic place, best natural scenes one could see, no luxury accommodation, but a new hotel named gayki khang zhang ph nos. 03794224649, has nice decent accommodation, but it is a hotel and not a resort. Food is good, but expensive. This hotel has a nice disco pub, and a health club too.
Food, sight-seeing and shopping: No big market, food options are also very limited, but place is worth visiting. Must watch sangster lake, sela pass, tawang monastery and bumla pass (pass from where China entered India territory in 1962 war). Best time to visit is October to December.
Activities & things to do: You can do trekking, angling in and around tawang, dirang and bomdilla.
Travel tips, How to reach, travel warnings etc: If, travelling by road, make sure during monsoons roads conditions are proper, frequent landslides occur during rains. One can take helicopter from Guwahati to tawang and back also. it is only one hour flight. But you can miss the best hill drive experience. For helicopter bookings : Mr. shiva prasad 09402065198 or 03794224560. From Guwahati it is almost 600 kms, 400 kms is hill drive, one could take break in hotel pemaling, dirang and move to tawang.

"Tawang trip - October 2009"

Tawang Experience: Tawang is a very congested town in Arunachal Pradesh. The road to Tawang from Bomdila is very interesting and scenic but Tawang city is not attractive at all. As I went in October, I did not see a trace of snow either on Sela Pass nor on any mountains which you see from Tawang.
Food, sight-seeing and shopping: Food is very expensive. I stayed in Tawang View. There are many Tawang View hotels in Tawang but try to get one which is near the Emporium ... it is new and much better but a bit far (2 kms approx.) from the market place. The food in the hotel is very good. There were no resturents nearby so better to eat in the same hotel where you are staying. I did not find anything interesting for shopping. There are only 4 interesting places to see as sight seeing from Tawang: a) Monestry b)Madhuri lake c) China Border and d) War Memorial
Activities & things to do: It is worth staying maximum 2 to 3 nights as Monastery and War Memorial can be done in the same day. One day from China border and one day for Lake.
Travel tips, How to reach, travel warnings etc: One has to hire car from Guwahati or Tezpur. Tawang is very expensive. In North East yor cellular will not work unless it is post paid and most probably in Tawang only BSNL postpaid. Don't think of getting a prepaid sim card in Tawang or in Arunachal Pradesh as it might take 2 months to get one after all the necessary verification. If you are going in off season, better book your hotels while you are there instead of going through travel agents. Travel Agents are always saying that it is hard to get hotel rooms but the truth is in Tawang you will get plenty of hotels... I will say at least 15 hotels minimum.
