"Temple tour" new review

Thanjavur Experience: Thanjavur is one of Tamil Nadu's ancient cities. The 1000-year-old Brihadeeswara temple is a must-see. It is surprising that the palace, which now houses the art gallery, is nowhere in comparison.
Food, sight-seeing and shopping: Being Diwali eve when we visited, the market road where our hotel was located, was an ideal destination for budget shoppers. Did not see any great shops or eateries though.
Activities & things to do: The temple is one place where you could devote half a day, and for enthusiasts a full day. It is beautifully maintained.
Travel tips, How to reach, travel warnings etc: By road from Chennai via Pondy it is a great experience. Thanjavur being the rice bowl of TN, you can see a lot of paddy fields. It is five hours from Pondicherry by car and one can stop at Kumbakonam, the land of a 1000 temples, en route. There is a small stretch on the grand anicut dam which is narrow and traffic gets delayed.

"Thanjavur - Heritage center of Tamil Nadu"

Thanjavur Experience: Thanjavur is a beautiful place on the banks of river Cauvery and it is a cultural center of Tamil Nadu. The big temple is a marvelous site and one should not miss to visit the temple which is regarded as the world heritage site by UNESCO.
Food, sight-seeing and shopping: Food is okay, mainly south indian type. Things to be purchased in Thanjavur includes famous Thanjavur paintings and dancing dolls. Dancing dolls and many handicraft items can be purchased in road side shops just out side the big temple..
Activities & things to do: Main attraction is the big temple which will keep one wondering how it was built one thousand years ago with limited technology and resources..
Travel tips, How to reach, travel warnings etc: Thanjavur is well connected by rail and road. Lots of nearby tourist places like Kumbakonam, Thiruvyar, Mayiladudurai, Navagraha tempels are situated within a radius of 40 km..

"Brihadeeswara Temple"

Thanjavur Experience: A spectacular temple built by the great Rajaraja Chola. The Shiva linga here is awesome. The temple architecture is simply exquisite, there aren't words enough to describe the experience.
Food, sight-seeing and shopping: The massive, monolith Nandi is everyone's delight. Take the best camera you have and the bet is you wont want to stop clicking away!!!
Activities & things to do: And dont miss the shops opposite the temple selling the famous Thanjavur 'thalai aatti bommais', traditional dolls that simply wobble without toppling over and other artifacts.
Travel tips, How to reach, travel warnings etc: We took the bus from our hotel. Autos are also available, though need to bargain a bit. And best to visit in the evening, else walking on the courtyard in the blazing sun can take away the will to enjoy.

"A short weekend at 'the big temple'."

Thanjavur Experience: Apart from 'the big temple' there is the art gallery with the collection of stone sculptures.Unless you want to splurge on the usual paintings etc. The stone sculpture collection is a good 'see', if you are interested in that sort of stuff.
Food, sight-seeing and shopping: Mostly veg options around town. The usual south Indian fare is the best bet to stick to.
Activities & things to do: The art gallery with the collection of sculptures is an interesting place to kill time. The government run parts of the palace are sad as expected. Private enterprise has taken at least some effort to organize things, despite the hilarious description of the crazy whale bone.
Travel tips, How to reach, travel warnings etc: I am guessing Karaikudi might be an interesting detour from here.Or even Picchavaram.

"The Big Temple."

Thanjavur Experience: Visited this Big temple in the last week of Dec 2010. Awesome and I am still recovering ;) This 10th Century temple is on the UNESCO heritage sites. The location of the temple is beautiful and very clean. The Palace, Sarswati Book Library and other places are 2 km from the temple. Chola kings had a passion for building beautiful temples so their palaces are not very impressive.
Food, sight-seeing and shopping: Visited only the Big Temple. You dont get any eatables inside the temple complex. We went in the morning half but have heard that you need to visit the temple during dusk. Lighting is said to be very good. Outside the temple you get anything and everything. Temple is in the heart of the city.
Activities & things to do: Just walk inside the temple complex and go back in time. Every structure inside is to be admired. Go through all the paintings which are superbly done. See the linga and get blessed. Best part is no one inside the temple forces you to buy any worship items, etc. This is one place where you are left to yourself and you can sit out there and watch the hundreds of tourists come and go. Sit there and visualize how the kings and the town people roamed around during the 10th century. Fascinating. Would take approx half a day to explore the temple and another 2 + hours to see the palace complex. So keep a complete day to visit temple, palace and other surrounding areas.
Travel tips, How to reach, travel warnings etc: Since it is in the heart of the city, a rickshaw ride should cost you Rs 40/50. If you are travelling in your private vehicle, no problem. After temple, again you will have to travel 2 km to see the Palace, Sarswati Library (which has old maps and palm leaves - naadi shastra was written) and a museum which has beautiful bronze and other material sculptures. Some entrance fees are charged at the entrance of the palace but no entrance fees to see the temple.

"Big Temple"

Thanjavur Experience: Tallest and Gigantic old Temple. Wonder how they built when no machines were there! In my view this is one of the wonders of the world. 13 KM away from Thanjavur in Tiruvaiyur there is 10th Century Shiva Temple worth visiting. This temple deserves better maintenance. Palace next to Big Temple has good collection of 9th-10th century bronze idols. A re-assembled Whale's skeleton is very rare item.
Food, sight-seeing and shopping: Genuine Thanjavur paintings, rare books and other items available inside the Palace.
Activities & things to do: Go to Big temple around 5PM watch in sun light. Watch sun set behind the temple. The temple is built such that it is not suppose cast any shadow on the ground.
Travel tips, How to reach, travel warnings etc: 50 KM from Trichy on NH-67.
