Posted by AK | Tue Jul 12, 2011 3:53 pm
Me and my wife have planned to go visit Nainital in September. I would like to know the following.
1) how far is Nainital from Lucknow?
2) What is the best mode of transport from from Lucknow?
3) What are the places to visit in Nainital?
4) What will be the weather conditions during September?
In addition to this i would like to take some suggestions regarding my trip. A package tour would be better or i can just plan my own accordingly after i reach Nainital?

First and foremost, there is no need to take any package trip to Nainital.
There is no direct connection between Lucknow and nainital. You have to get down at Kathgodam/Haldwani/Lalkuan.
You can avail
# 13019 Bagh Express (Dep. Lucknow 0030 hours, Arr. Kathgodam 0930 hours.
# 12209 Kathgodam Garib Rath Exp (Dep. Lucknow 0805 hours, Arr. Kathgodam 1505 hours.).
Off the two, the first one would be preferable as you'll reach Nainital in the daylight itself. Journey from Kathgodam to Nainital would be between 1.5 to 2 hours.
The lake itself is a joy to watch. Besides, you have the Naini Devi Temple, Zoological gardens, Lake view point, Sukhtal, Naukuchiatal. Drivers would insist on 5-point, 7-point concepts. Do not go for that. Most of them like, suicide point, waterfall, Himalaya Darshan are utter rubbish.
September would be on the border line for monsoons. Anyway, lets hope for the best.
You can try the
# EVELYN. Its right on the lake. (P) 05942235457/05942235467
# SAROVAR (run by KMVN). Location is awesome but you have to climb around 100 stairs to your room. (P) 05942235570/05942231503

September is not a recommended season to go their but not too bad at all. You'll definitely enjoy your trip.
1. It is around 387 kms from Lucknow to nainital.
2. Personally I'll prefer a self driven car or a cab, but here I'm mentioning all modes,
By Road : State Transport Bus/ Self Driven Car/ Cab (5 Seater Cab will charge approx Rs. 6- 8k).
By Train : From Lucknow Junction to Kathgodam (fair u should chk the IRCTC chart) and always book in advance. Then Hire a cab or take a state transport upto Nainital.
By Air : Lucknow to Pant Nagar, then hire a cab or take a state transport upto Nainital.
3. Kindly visit the below link for the famous destination at Nainital;

4. Quite Rainy and breezy cold at night. Overall very enjoyable.
I'll prefer to plan your trip yourself by analyzing their on spot situation but don't forget to book a Hotel in advance and before booking any hotel, request them to provide their latest pics of the offered room and hotel surroundings. Just to ensure and make yourself comfortable before going.
Happy journey,
GOD BLESS

Hi AK
Lucknow to Nainital is about 370-400 kms. by road. You can either take a 8 hours drive or take the overnight train to Kathgodam and then hire a cab from there up to Nainital.
September would be a good month to go since the monsoons would have gone by and the winters would be yet to set in. It will be the time for some awesome weather. Having said that, Nainital is very unpredictable with regards to the rain due to the lake and its location. So, do carry a couple of umbrellas or jackets with you.
In Nainital besides the lake & the boat ride, you can take a tour of the surrondings lakes (tals), take a ride on the cable car to go to the hill top and enjoy leisurely walks along the mall and all around the lake as well. There is no need to take any tour, just ask your hotel to arrange for a local guide and ask him to take you to all the surrounding lakes.
Some good accomodation options on the Mall itself are The Grand, Alka and Classic.
Enjoy!
