Ajanta and Ellora are two separate sites set apart by 2 hours road journey of 80 kms. Ajanta may be admired for the paintings, designs and use of colours on the cave walls, while Ellora, more elaborate, is remarkable for the rock cut architecture and wall murals. You can google their history and relate. Best way to go about is to stay at Hotel Kailash, next door to Ellora, and make a day trip to Ajanta.
An overnight journey in Devagiri express, which leaves Mumbai CST at 21.05 hours, will reach you at Aurangabad at 4.05 in the morning. Take the pick up from the hotel and reach within next 20 minutes.
Sleep till 8 and leave for Ajanta by 9a.m. Reach by 11.00 a.m maximum and spend till 6p.m. Lovely market of relics outside the caves. Come back by 8 or 9 after a lovely preferably moonlit drive and have a good night rest in the cottages of Hotel Kailash to start exploring Ellora next day.
Of course if you fall in love wih Ajanta, go back the next day.
