Chopta tour

Posted by Partha | Mon Apr 20, 2009 4:50 pm

Is it worthwhile to spend a night at Chopta to visit Deoriatal , or one can stay at Ukhimath and visit Chopta- Deoriatal. We are elderly couple and cannot possibly trek to tunganath- can we reach there by car ?
Will it be possible for us to walk to Deoriatal from Sari, which can be reached by vehicle or is the route very steep?

Hi Partha,
You can stay in Ukhimath in hotel by GMVN(Garhwal Mandal) which is best and economic. You can take car from here to goto Village Saari which is abOUT 8 KMS from here and takes 30-40min . From there it is streneous and back -braking trek route of 3.5 KM upward to taal but you can take mule from here which charges Rs 300.00 to and fro. on the route the the way takes "Y" shape left of Y goes to Lord shive and little convienient other side of "Y" water resoirvoir where you can freshen up a bit and proceed to explore the heavenly deoria taal. If you are lucky you will see all major peaks from here. see the image of chaukhamba peak on the taal also hathi ghora and neelkanth peak is visible.
forest department charges Rs40.00 each to visit the place.Donot get overloaded with clothes as you will start sweating if you trek .You can also stay in in chopta where only very few 2-3 hotels are available with few rooms. it would be better if you book the room online by visiting their website. from Saari you can come to chopta which is 24 km As you mentioned you are elderly couple I would advice you must carry woollen cap as breeze is very cold which gives sudden headache which last for hours.Maybe you can wear 2 at the same time to avoid chilly wind to enter your ears in chopta. From chopta it is 3.5 kms through dense rhodendorus forest where some times you get glimpse of some himalayan birds and chimpanzees if you are lucky trek as you climb high it becomes more strenous towards Tungnath. there is no motorable road to reach tungnath.

Dear Sujata,

Thanks for your details. Regret the delay in acknowledgement. From your info, we plan to drop Deoriatal from our programme - apprears to be too rigorous for us.
By the way, what is the best route to Ukhimath ? Drectly from hardwar/ rishikesh ?
Thanks again,
Prof Partha S Banerjee
