What are the places we can cover in Havelock Island during a 5 day stay? Also give suggestions about the chief attractions over there. Can we tour the places to ourselves or should we hire a tour guide? And when is the best time to visit Havelock island? please help

Hi Kirit.
The best way to explore Havelock is self basis. The main attractions are snorkelling, scuba diving .. a visit to the radhanagar beach (where you can spend the entire day at leisure) and fishing of course. I would suggest that you check on the resort yourself for Havelock and ask them to organize the trip for you. The better options are Seashell resort (budget) and "Barefoot @ Havelock" OR "Silversand Havelock" for expensive options.

Havelock is basically a place to relax and be near nature. One can of course go snorkelling, glass boat riding to see the corals and scuba diving. There are one or two day scuba diving lessons available for the more adventurous. Otherwise one can just visit the beaches, Radhanagar, and the Elephant beach to swim and lie around in the sand or walk along the coasts. There are a lot of local eateries which cook lovely fish dishes for you for reasonable price. Lots of places to stay in from the Andamans tourism complex to The Wild Orchid, Sea Shell, or Barefoot . Generally people go in the winter months as the weather is mild, but it is also very crowded at that time. We had gone in February--it was a bit warm but still fun.

Dear Kirit,
There are NO places to be covered in Havelock. Planning a trip to Havelock is not a sightseeing trip. It is a tiny island in the middle of nowhere. A large part of the island is covered with dense unapproachable forest. Please go there if you want to be peaceful and quiet and want to reflect. It is a place to swim, surf, boat, paint, write a book or take . I was in Havelock in 2009 December and felt I had been transported 100 years behind in time clock. There is no traffic and no vehicles. One bus or auto crosses you after one hour. There are three main beaches called the jetty, Kalapathar and Radhanagar. There are three ways to reach and exit Havelock i.e. helicopter, fast and luxurious cruise ship and ordinary slow ferry ship. The chopper ride takes 20 minutes from Port Blair, the cruise ship takes 90 minutes and ferry takes 4 hours. I chose the ferry as I wanted to enjoy the ride in the deep oceans.
At the jetty, you have a dozen dhabas and Barefoot. Barefoot offers sea sports but not all people can indulge. You have to be extremely adventurous to be able to go scuba diving without prior sea swimming experience and I don’t recommend it. Snorkelling is a possibility at the Elephant Island near Havelock. You can rent a boat from barefoot or travel into the main chowk in Havelock and find locals to provide the same facilities at cheaper rates. Kalapathar is a beautiful pure blue beach but it is rocky and not recommended for swimming. Radhanagar is probably the most beautiful beach in the world and a must see everday early morning or near sunset.
There is one excellent sea food dhaba at the main chowk. It is not v prominent and you will have to search for it. The tuna steak, crabs and fresh prawns are delicious.
Barefoot has a 5 star property at radhanagar which has a bar frequented by foreigners as it is quite expensive. There is no other bar in town.
That is all about Havelock.

Dear Kirit,
Best Time to visit Havelock - November to March
Things to do: Relax, relax, relax, Enjoy the Sea, Beaches, Sea Food, Snorkeling, Trekking
Word of Caution: Donot venture out alone in creeks/Marshlands and isolated parts of the beaches. One American lady was killed by a Salt Water Crocodile near Radhanagar Beach.
Regards,
Swastik
