Hi,

We drove down from Hyderabad to Gokarna a couple of weeks back. The shortest route is via Hubli, I think you can get a overnight bus to Hubli and then hire a car or take another bus to Gokarna.

It's quite a distance from Bangalore, almost 8 hours so would not advise taking that route as you'll end up spending too much time travelling.

I think you can also go via Udupi from where it is about 4 hours and i think they have regular buses plying.

It quite a nice place, not too commercialized so the facilities are somewhat limited. We stayed at the Namaste Cafe, which is okay for singles or couples but may not be suitable for a family with kids. The Om Beach Resort is quite a nice place as well, they have ayurvedic massages, but only during season. There aren't too many options for water sports, but the beach itself is quite nice to walk around, so if you're planning a trip just to relax then Gokarna is the right place. There are 5 beaches officially but 3 of them were flooded so we only spent time at Om beach.

There is also a temple in the city but we didn't visit it, so no idea what it's like. The town itself is very small and most places are at walkable distance. The Om beach is about 8 kms away and is the main attraction at Gokarna.
