Hi,
I have decided t o go to Gangtok this November with my daughter and friends. Can someone please help me with the travel part. I dont want to fly there. I want to go by train and experience the train journey. Can someone please suggest a travel route by train, from Mumbai to Gangtok?

Hi Shilpa,
There is no direct train link to Gangtok.... you can only get upto New Jalpaiguri (80 km from Gangtok). There are several trains that link Mumbai with New Jalpaiguri. From New Jalpaiguri you could travel by taxi/ mini bus/ bus etc. The drive is very scenic and is best enjoyed by taxi. You could also go to Kalimpong and spend a day or two there...the valley views there are something to be cherished.. Gangtok in November is very pleasant and beautiful.. carry a few woolens for the evenings and nights. And carry a rain coat for emergency, for you never know when it rains in Gangtok.
Enjoy your holiday.

Hi,
Try the Dadar-Guwahati express which goes via New Jalpaiguri (NJP). The train I guess is bi-weekly, but the journey will be around 40+ hours, so I wonder if it would be a good idea. From NJP station, take a cab/auto/bus to Siliguri (ask for SNT or NBSTC bus-stand) which is 10-12 kms away. From Siliguri you have many options:
1. Bus from SNT (Sikkim National Transport) bus-stand which leaves every hour. The last bus leaves at 13:30 hours. Alternately take a bus from NBSTC (North Bengal State Transport) bus-stand. Along the same stretch of road, you will find many private tourist buses also.
2. Better option is take a 10-seater shared taxi (Sumo, Max, Qualis) which costs Rs 150 per person. You can book the entire cab if you want.
The journey to Gangtok is breath-taking and will take around 3.5 to 4.5 hours. The distance is 114 kms.
regards
Bappaditya
