Hi Alka
If yoy want to access Mahabaleshwar from the nearby cities, Wathar is the nearest railway station and if you are dropping in here from the distant corners of India then Pune would be the convenient railway station.
If you want to enjoy a motor ride in order to getting to Mahabaleshwar, then it would take 6 hours to reach from Mumbai. There are in-fact two routes both of which offer a network of smooth and motorable including state and national highways. If you begin your journey from Mumbai, you will have to go through the route of Panvel and via Mahad you will be reaching Mahabaleshwar. The other route from Pune would take 2 hours to reach Mahabaleshwar. The road journey is going to be simply outstanding as you will come across a varied terrain and scenic landscape, which would add up to your experience of Mahabaleshwar.
Route 1: Bombay-Kalamboli-Panvel (take NH17)-Pen-Mahad-Pholadpur (turn left, off NH17)-Mahabaleshwar, around 200 kms
Route 2: Bombay-Kalamboli-Panvel (take NH4, bikes not allowed on Pune expressway)-Lonavla-Pune-Shirwal-Khambatki Ghat (turn off NH4 a little after ghat ends)-Wai-Panchgani-Mahabaleswar, around 275 kms
Both roads are good. NH4 has the advantage of being 4-laned except for the last 45 kms.
NH17 is 2-lane road all the way. Has very little traffic by day.
Best time to visit is October to June.
Regards

Forget going by train it is very inconvenient. There are many private buses going to Mahabaleshwar from Dadar in mumbai. They leave generally in the morning at 6:30 am or in the afternoon at 2:30pm and the bookings can be done at Dadar itself. State govt also runs semi-luxury & luxury buses. The Journey is approx 6 hours. However if you are a group of 5 to 6 then it makes sense to drive down in your vehicle or hire a vehicle since you can use if for sightseeing there. If you like the rains and want to frolic in the many waterfalls then july to September will be fun. No bookings are required in this season and bargain to atleast 50% discounts on hotel tariffs. It rains 625 cms here as compared to 245 cms in Mumbai. Otherwise October to February will be the perfect season. There are two routes to Mahabaleshwar one via Mumbai-Pune expressway via Lonavala, Pune bypass Wai and Panchagani which is longer (290 kms) but quicker. Most of it is aleast four lanes except the last stretch. The other way is 240 kms via Mumbai-Goa highway (NH-17) through Panvel-Karnala-Pen-Kolad-Mahad-Poladpur. Turn left off the highway here for Mahableshwar visit Pratapgarh fort on the way and carry on to Mahabaleshwar. I would advice this way to go and come back via expressway.
Enjoy yourself
