self and family plan to be in Madurai for 2 days - 1 day Madurai local sight seeing and day 2 - go to Rameswaram. any tips on what needs to be done / covered / must see ? any tips on what to avoid / not worth doing ?

Dont miss the Meenakshi temple in Madurai. Rameswaram is a day trip - TTDC and every other tour operator organises it from Madurai. If you have more time do a short trip to Kodaikanal which is only 4hrs away. Best wishes.

meenakshi temple is must see..
Hotel Prem niwas is the best place to stay with family,, near to railway station.
Madurai is center for both Rameshwaram and Kanyakumari.
Don;t take the tour buses, they will rush for everything, so u won;t be able to see the places in agood way// you can get the tamil nadu roadways buses in every 10 minutes from madurai bus stand. u can stay in Gujrat bhawan which is just at a stone throw away from the Rameshwaram main temple.

In madurai Meenakshi amman temple is a must see place, kids would like tirumalai nayakar mahal & gandhi museum, plan ur evening at Rajaji park or at Eco park.

Raeshwaram is a 4hrs(approx) journey from madurai. do take bath in all holy wells there, be careful with touts. pls do visit devipatnam, navagrahas inside sea. pamban bridge is a engineering marval. if u find time go to Danishkodi.

The best option is to get hire a cab from Royal tours & travels located at madurai the pioneers in the field of tourism and they would charge Rs.4.50 per km in an non a/c indica ie., for 02 days at amdurai and rameswaram includes sight seeing the total distance covered would be 500 Kms * Rs.4.50 = Rs.2250 must be paid by you for an independent cab sir.
