If u are going for relaxation and prefer to stay indoors then any destination with good resort should be fine for as many days you want to stay. But if are freaky, interested only in sightseeing then Mahabaleshwar is a matter only for a day or maximum two.

Yep 3 days are enough!
If you leave early from mumbai/pune, cover wai and stay at panchgani, then next day whole day tour of mahabaleshwar or half day tour plus pratapgad, return back to mahabaleshwar and return back!

3 days are enough to stay. there are lot of hotels there, but i will suggest you to do booking before you go to any place for saftey, but if its not peak season or if your confident that you will get ticket then its ok.
Site seeing:-
Pratapgarh Fort, various waterfalls and viewing points like Lingamala Waterfalls, Wilson Point, Bombay point, Monkey point, Connaught Peak, Hunter Point, Castle Rock.
View points like Table land, Tapola, Rojopyri Caves, Parsi point, Dhom Dam, etc.

Mahabaleshwar is one of the most beautiful hill station in India. I think, 1 day is enough for sightseeing of Mahabaleshwar and other is for panchgani. panchgani is also one of hill station. There are many tourist attractions like waterfalls, Pratapgarh Fort, Table land and caves.

1. 3 days enough to cover M'bleshwar, P'gani & P'garh.
2. No Need to book in advance. You will end up paying more.
3. Look for hotels away from the main market and press hard on bargain.. They are calm & quite & You will get good rooms/cottages at reasonable prices..
4. Catch an agent at the bus stand and tell him your budget (-200/300). Ofcourse he will not be willing and will give you 100 reasons like hotels are full, you cant get hotels at this price...blah blah....dont trust him and tell him you wont pay any more..he will show you something good at your budget. Then negotiate with hotel yourself. You can do this even if going by bus or your own vehicle.
