Matheran visit in November Q&A
Matheran visit in November
Posted by Brian | Sat Aug 11, 2012 2:07 pm
We are in the UK near London. Planning a trip possibly to Matheran in November. We understand no cars in matheran. My wife cannot walk very far, so how does Matheran provide for People with mobility problems?
Is it Horses only from town to Dasturi Gate or is it a horses pulling a carriage that People sit in?
Will the train be running in November?
We think it is too far to hotels in Matheran from car/bus stop?
I understand it does not run in the Monsoons, but they are running trials this wek to see if OK for next year.
Thank you
Brian

Vinayak, Thank you
The 'pull cars', are these 'rickshaws' pulled by a driver?
Where do they work, just in the town, from the station etc or everywhere including to Dasturi Gate?
thank you, Brian

Dear Brian,
Here are point-wise replies to your queries:
1. Matheran does not provide anything for people with mobility problems.
You can consider it as a sort of wild life sanctuary, pretty rugged, for those who want to rough it out. If your wife cannot walk very far, its likely that she will find Matheran a hell on earth, because other than horses cantering about, on which, dare-devil types ride, most visitors prefer to walk in the forest pathways and trails, which are steep, broken and littered with stones, rocks, debris and horse droppings. You can hire this human-pulled carts to commute from point to point (there are many observation points in Matheran), but may find the experience intimidating, expensive and very very uncomfortable.
2. From Dasturi point, there are 3 options to reach your place of accommodation: (a) Walking, if you are in the mood, are physically fit and your hotel is nearby (b) On horses, if your constitution permits this and (c) On carts, which are pulled by humans (in this day and age).. the carts trundle along, till you reach your destination. Be fore-warned that the horses and the human-carts are very expensive. There are no horse-pulled carriages in the area.
3. Trains may or may or may not run. If you reach the nearest rail-head, Neral, find out if the train is running. Browse the train's time-table on the net. Reach well ahead of your departure, as tickets can fall short. If the train is not running, or if you are unable to board the same, due to any reason, best way is to walk a short distance to the taxi stand, and hire a taxi. It takes 1/4 of the time to reach Matheran this way. For your return journey, again you can try the train, which is quite a long haul.
4. Hotels might be in the town's main street, near the railway station, or may be far off, isolated, hidden behind tall trees and foliage. Browse the net and book in advance. For a true "Matheran" experience, avoid the hotels on the main street.
In short, a lot depends on your temperament, your budget, your frame of mind and your health condition. Hope I have answered your questions satisfactorily.. ![]()
Happy Vacations..

Hi !
Matheran in November, is ideal.
Train services operate during this time. Train journey is very interesting. You can buy 1st class ticket to enjoy the view during the journey.
Veg only, veg & Non-veg hotels are available in Matheran, You have a wide choice from budget to 3 * .
Walkiing is the best way to move around Matheran. However horses and human-cart are the alternatives.
Enjoy the climate, food , stay and sight-seeing at Matheran, one of the 3 places in the world where vehicles are not allowed.
