Is it better to visit Bodhgaya or nalanda to get a good sense of Buddhist history?

I would say Bodhgaya if you are interested in Buddhist religion - since this is where Buddha preached and attained enlightenment. The most important symbols of Buddhism such as the Mahabodhi Temple, the sacred Bodhi Tree, etc is found here. However, if you are interested in the secular side of Buddhism - i.e. the spread of education by the BUddhist emperors - definitely go to nalanda. It is stunning to even think that an international university of such stature existed in India, centuries before Oxford and Cambridge.
