Which is the best HOUSE BOAT Operator in Kerala

Hi friends, I plan to travel to Kerala ( Allepey & Kumarkom) and would like to know which is the best houseboat operator in the above areas and the charges, do the houseboat differ or are they all the same? I want one where I can also avail good Veg food and services, where on internet can I get a list of all the Houseboat operators in kerala. In addition I wil be going to unwind so m looking for real good massage treatments ( not the ayurveda hard rub) but good reflexology treatments, any advices.

Hi Amit,

Have you been on your trip yet? If not, I would suggest you try Rainbow Cruises when you make your trip. Their boats a re sooo beautiful and unlike anything I've ever seen. Try their website to see some of the great offers they have. I found the trip to be very interesting as my family used to live in that area and our boat driver told us so many great stories as we sailed along. Their boats come in various sizes and rates vary, but the are all AC and have tvs. The boat we went on had a way to enclose the main living area so that when we stopped at night there were no bugs, something I hadn't seen on some of the other boats. Enjoy your trip, the backwaters are a great place to go and relax and unwind.

I had good experience with "Lake King Cruise" during March 2009. Please refer to http://wikitravel.org/en/Alleppey where I wrote in little more detail.
I would recommend you a boat with an upper-deck. An upper-deck enhances the experience. On-the-spot inspection of the boat before you board it is a must. Do not commit all the money in advance, limit it to a token (in best case zero) advance.

You may also finalise your houseboat when u arrive at Alleppy. There are several agents and during monsoon, most of the houseboats will be available.

Hello,
Please avoid keralahouseboat.org (Global vision tours). I had been to their house boat (Single bed room) a few weeks back and following was my experience.

Pros:
1) Staff was courteous and helpful.
2) Food was good

Cons:
1) The starting point is 15 Km from Alleppy, some remote place called Kainakkary. We struggled to find the place. Most of the other houseboat services start from Alleppy town itself.
2) The boat was not the one shown in the website. It was smaller and didn't have Wall Cupboards or Teakwood Wall Finishing as mentioned in the website. Flooring was cheap coir carpet instead of Vinyl Flooring. Toilet was stinking and very small.
3)A/C was without temperature control. It gets cool very fast and I had to get up 10 times to switch off/on to maintain the .
4)None of their boats have Cable TV. rely on DVD's supplied for entertainment.

We enjoyed the trip till evening but night stay was not great. They stop the boat at some remote place and you are left in the company of mosquitoes and insects. I would suggest to take only day trip in house boat and return back to a good .

Also note that none of the Houseboat show you narrow canals and real life. Plan to hire a canoe and take a trip through narrow canals to get best experience of backwaters.

I would like to recommend 'Amrutham Houseboats' for your journey..
I hav done a day and night Cruise with them on July..
That was a fantastic exp..Rate was too less..A/c Deluxe Bedroom, all Luxury amenities..Food was really awesome..
