Dear Vasundhara,
Dharamshala is closest from Phatankot (about 120 Km.). You could take a car from Phatankot. Alternatively. you may have to stop at phatankot while going from Delhi.

Dear Traveller,
You could go to Chandigarh from Delhi;halt there and then proceed to dharamshala.
That would be a shorter route.

Yes one can go to Chandigarh and then on to Dharamsala but that would be driving over mountain roads for arround 200 kms. Not when one is driving for pleasure. If I was to go by car from Delhi to Dharamsala, I would go to from Delhi to Jallandher about 400 kms and a seven hour or less( depending on ones highway driving experience in INDIA) comfortable double carrageway highway drive, stay in a good hotel like Maya or Kamal palace in Jallendher for the night. Next morning drive to pathankot (100 Km) and then on to Dharamsala 60 kms on a good broad single carrageway highway.

I would suggest route as delhi to ambala to ludhiana to phagwara... take a right from phagwara reach hoshiarpur and thereafter go to kangra via chintpurni, jwalaji and then finally around 20 kms from kangra is dharamsala. if you start early in the morning around 5 - 6 am, you can reach phagwara by 11 30 to 12 noon and from there it is only around 4 hours comfortable drive. the road from panipat to phagwara is getting six laned so you have to zig zag a little otherwise the whole road stretch is good. From Phagwara to Hoshiarpur is 2 lane road and thereafter its light mountainous road and is in fine condition. I dont think you need to make a stay inbetween, the road is good so head straight to Dharmshala and Mcleodganj and dont forget to check palampur on the way back ... its just 20 30 odd Kms from Dharamshala and you can reach Kangra via Palampur. Dharamshala Palampur is very picturesque route with lots of tea estates around!
Cheers!
