Holiday trip to Gujarat Q&A

Hai all,

I am planning to make a holiday trip to Ahmedabad, Rajkot, Somnath Temple, Sasan Gir, Deu, Dwarka and Jamnagar with the family in Feb - March 2008. Will the atmosphere in Gujarat will be suitable in those days.

What are the historical, religious and site seeing with beaches are situated in or nearby these areas. Which route will be better, i think journey can be mixed Air, Rail and Road.

If any of our friend have visited the route or living in the area can help.

great idea.visit the web site of gujarat tourism first.start from abad by a taxi and go to sasan via rajkot.stay at sinh sadan or at Junagadh and have day trip to sasan .go to veraval via sasan and stay at somnath 6 kms away.then go to dwarka jamnagar 250 kms away. stay come by coastal highway and see chorwad and Una then diu via veraval again.or else start from a train to jamnagar ,,marine sanctuary..here..dwarka -2 days then junagadh sasan -1 day then veraval somnath-1 day,bhalka. krishna death site.. then diu-2 days and then drop at rajkot to catch a train taxi back to abad.that will be better.

This is the best season to visit Gujarat. You can start your journey from Ahmedabad. Ahmedabad has lot to offer. You will need 2-3 days to experience Ahmedabad. Places you must visit are Calico mueseum of Textiles, Hatheesing Jain Temples, Stepwell of Adalaj,Gandhi Ashram. If you are interested in architecture, than Ahmedabad is the place to visit. IIM Ahmedabad,National Institute of Design (NID), Sanskar Kendra, Mill owner's Association are some of architectural marvels city has to offer. One acitvity I highly recommend is Heritage Walk. As you may be aware Old city of Ahmedabad is very famous for its "Pols"- a unique concept of community dwelling. Heritage Walk offered by Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation is a walking tour of these "Pols". Not only "Pols" but old jain and hindu temples and beautiful mosques are also covered in this walk. It starts from
Swaminarayan Temple at Kalupur and ends at Jamma Masjid.It takes 2 1/2 hours. It is guided walking tour.It is a must for any visitor to the city. Do not forget to eat Gujarat thali at village restaurant "Vishala".Go for dinner. Ahmedabad is also textile shoppers paradise. Do visit textile market of old city for block printed items.I am from Ahmedabad,so if you want any more info, i would be happy to provide.I would advise you to keep a day for short trips around Ahmedabad. I would recommedn 2 short day trips from Ahmedabad. One to Little Rann of Kachh to see Wild Asses and another to visit Step well of Patan (Amazing!) and Sun Temple of Modhera.
Take a taxi from Ahmedabad. Go to Dwarka from Ahmedabad via rajkot and Jamnagar. Distance is around 450 kms.Spend 2 nights in Dwarka. From Dwarka go to Somnath via Porbandar. In Porbandar see birthplace of Mahatma.Dwarka to Somnath is a coastal road of around 230-240 kms.So by evening you will be able to reach Somnath. Stay overnight in Somnath or Veraval.Next day after morning Darshan you can leave for Diu,which is around 50-60 kms.Stay for 2 nights in Diu.From Diu go to Sasan Gir.You can also choose to do Sasan gir first and go to Diu next. From somnath to sasan is around 50 kms.Lion Safari is twice a day. Also please check the day on which park is closed. I believe it is Wednesday.If you want to take a safari only once than next day you can leave for Ahmedabad to return to your hometown. Or you can stay for 2 nights,in case you are unlucky and do not sight lions on your first visit,and return to Ahmedabad. If you prefer to do Sasan first and Diu next you can come straight to Ahmedabad from Diu which will be around 400 kms.
