While on a holiday to KErala (first time) should I halt at Kottayam? I have heard it is a important place - but is there any sightseeing there?

not really..until you are interested in churches..go to Allapey and Kumaroam instead..from there head to Munnar..it will really help if you can tell which city you are planning to start from..if its Cochin then you can go to Allapey ,kumarkoam and then Munnar..and if you starting your trip from Madurai or Coimbatore then you can do the reverse..

Kottayam is the place to stay. Why? its the nearest to Komarkam, since komarkam is the place for houseboats. so I inform u that kottayam is the place to stay and visit the houseboats, and nearby there is a etamanur temple worth a visit. So enjoy

Stay at Kumarakom, not Kottayam. Kumarakom is just 20 minutes from kottayam and has some of the best resorts by the backwater. You may want to spend two nights there, provided you have the budget for it... but worth it.
Also, churches & life around kottayam are interesting to just take in...
