Me and my family want to go to Thanjavur for a few days . I wanted to know that other then the main temple , what else is there to see and do there ? Is there any shopping ?
Frankly, not much other than more temples (which are worth visiting though). But the main temple is really worth the visit and is something else. To see it in its complete splendour, do make it a point to visit it either early morning or around dusk.
There is a so-called palace with a museum which is probably the worst maintained and the biggest waste of time! Imagine, they charge just Rs 2/- for entry - how much can they maintain with that kind of revenue (when we visited, we were the only ones roaming around and left in less than 5 minutes!). Regarding shopping, silks and Tanjore paintings are the things to go for. Tanjore paintings are sold at the palace too and were reasonably priced. Finally, don't miss the chance to savour the excellent south indian thalis - simply finger-licking good!!
Hai, Tanjavur temple is superb, but its always hot there, there are not many places to see in tanjavur, but nearby u can visit tiruchy, srirangam etc, if u are interested i can give more details
In Thanjavur town, you should keep a few hours aside to visit the Brihadeeswara or Periya Kovil, and the museum where priceless Chola bronzes are housed.
In Thanjavur vicinity, there is so very much to see that even if you spend six months, you may not have seen it all! If you are interested, please go through my trip report of our visit to this region in July 08 with many, many photographs:

Tanjore shopping: Thalai Atti Bommai - shaking head dolls, you would have seen the famous Bharatanatyam dolls, they are also available in other forms, quite cute and cheap. Tanjore Paintings - gilded paintings of deities with stones, also available all over India Tanjore Plates - made of five metals, also of deities, nowadays they are quite expensive. Tanjore Murukku -famous snack. Brassware
