mahabalipuram to salem to pondicherry

Hi,

As I have earlier posted, we will be going to mahabalipuram. Now from Mahabalipuram we are planning to go to salem and from there pondicherry. is this the route or can we directly go from mahab to pondi? and if we visit salem, what are the sightseeing attractions around that place? any info will help.
