i dont think there is a direct train from a'bad to darjeeling. The closest station to darjeeling (2.5 hrs by jeep) is called New Jalpaiguri (NJP) and superfast trains go there regularly from Delhi (including Rajdhani) Other stations that are important junctions are perhaps allahabad (Tundla) and the closest to you is probably Kota (you will have to check though!) See...kepe in mind that the darjeeling side comes under the eastern/north-eastern and south-eastern railway while A'Bad (and mumbai where i am from) come under pure western sector.

Your best bet in my optinion is to travel to delhi or mumbai. From mumbai there is only 1 train - leaves twice a week and another similar train leaves once a week - called guwahati express. This goes nowhere close to a' bad and anyway takes ages to reach NJP (new jalpaiguri) I would recommend...go to delhi via rajdhani - then catch rajdhani to guwahati or catch brahmaputra . that will definitely be the fastest and u will get tickets else u do not hav emuch chance at all unfortunately.

Perhaps try going to gwalior or indore or bhopal and see if u get a connecting train to shift to the eastern/central line.

Sorry dude but thats how it is :( damned rubbish indian rail! :-)

I would suggest you come to Howrah and take the Darjeeling Mail from Sealdah the same evening. There are many more trains , mostly from Sealdah that reach New Jalpaiguri.( Incidentally, both Howrah and Sealdah are in Kolkata) :)
If you have unhindered internet access, it is advisable to go to the Indian Railway site where you can get all info on routes and fares.
